    LOVE THIS!!!

I’ve thought of doing something like that asteroid myself and I’ve been collecting different sizes of cans to make a space station.

That floating piece of spaceship hull is absolute genius btw.

I’ve been hearing the sirens call of 6mm scifi more and more again lately so I’ll be following this and I’ll be taking notes 😎.

    Cheers,
    Stroezie.

Having gone through almost the exact same thing with my youngest daughter I can feel your pain and I get your worrying about her future.
For us it really turned around once we could get her into a special education school. I realise that for some people making the decision to send their kid to a spec.ed. shool carries some stigma but for our daughter the difference way day and night. In about one to two weeks time school went from something she dreaded to being fun again and she’s well on her way to regaining her learning deficit.
Al this to say, hang in there, things will get better.
And don’t worry about Crom’s Anvil content for the site, I’ll just push all of the stuff I’ve bought from you to the front of my painting que and start posting ASAP.😉

    Stay strong,

    Haha, I love it!
Can you imagine how many minis would be lost playing on that thing?😋
Really inspirational, makes me want to build some terrain.

Who makes the camels, and the sultan looking dude?

The sultan looking dude has moved to another owner since I bought him but I managed to track him down for you

    https://www.stonewallfigures.co.uk/shop/capitan-15mm-naval-crews/15mm-napoeonic-naval-crews/bereber-officers/

Sadly there was only one of him in the pack I got, I still have two of the chap with the shamshir and mace in the leadpile though.

The camels alas I have no clue where I got them anymore.

I am surprised you have not added a snake to one of those jars, sticking its head out…

I was actually thinking more along the lines of a basket with a snake but….             …maybe….

More minis from the box of shame.
This time a trader with his camel train and somen beastmen to waylay him.

I also made some table funishings and a table and painted some large pots for my palace tiles.

And did a little conversion, a Crom’s Anvil bodyguard became a Genie.

The lamp is a bit oversized, but I can reason that away due to the magical effects of the genie emerging from the lamp so that’s O.K.😉

I ordered a whole bunch of beads over on Ali Express to make wall decorations and colums and maybe even some more small knicknacks for the palace tiles but they’ll take a while to arrive so that project may have to wait a bit.

No worries, I have plenty of orther things to keep me busy.

    Cheers,

    Those tree stands look awesome!
I’ve been thinking of sculpting some trees with foliage in 15mmm.
Do you have any tutorials on how you do the leaves?

That rug seems to have a very real fabric worn texture effect. How you do that?

I primed it with unthinned gesso straight out of the pot.

Lay it on thick with horizontal brush strokes, wait for it to partially dry and do a second layer with vertical strokes.

This gives just enough texture to look like woven fabric.

The rest of the faded look is me not having the patience to wait until my cheap craft paints were fully dry before applying the varnish.

    The Hatun has a Secret…

Surely such a mighty warrior as you need not fear a soft female such as me.
Why don’t you join me on the pillows and perhaps we can find a more pleasurable way to settle our differences.

Then when our brave hero’s back is turned…

When I first saw the Hatun Yasmina figure it immediately made me think of the 5e D&D artwork for the Lamia. I still had some lion miniatures sticking in the leadpile so I decided to order two Yasmina’s and see if I couldn’t make something happen.

The terrain was a test to see if I could make a set of tiles and scatter that better represents the kind of opulent palace that conan likes to sneak into in search of oppertunities😇

I had fun making them so you may expect to see more like these in the future.

    Threadomancy warning

Well, I just ordered a bunch of stuff from Croms Anvil, so I decided to open up the Box of Shame and see if I could maybe finish some minis I had already started before the new shinies arrived.

    Here’s the first group

I’m thinking of using these as Conan (Crom’s Anvil), Belit (Battle Valor) and her Black Reavers (Blue Moon).

    More to come soon…          …maybe😉

When I got back from the holidays I found a package from Battle Valor Games waiting for me.

There were a bunch of sculpts in his lines which I really liked but I was a bit hesitant as I kept running in to various forum posts saying the minis were really big for 15mm.

After much hemming and hawing I decided to just take the plunge and see and well, some of them are and some of them are not.

As I paint them I’ll include pictures with models from other manufacturers so you can judge for yourselves.

Here’s the first ones, four dwarves from the dwarven character pack.

And here they are alongside some Demonworld dwarves.

I also painted my own sculpts from the previous posts.

    The Grell

    and the Carrion Crawlers

And off course I couldn’t resist throwing together a little scene,
It would seem my new dwarves have run into a little spot of trouble while exploring a newly discovered mushroom forest.
Luckily they brought along their steam golem to help clear the path.

    Cheers,

Maybe it’s time to just fire it of to you and start lining up the next.

    Another day, another monster.

I’m starting to feel like an evil overlord or maybe a mad wizard cackling away in his laboratory😁

This one was fairly easy to make and if anyone were to tell me they wanted to have a go at sculpting a monster I think I’d recomend they try to make a Grell.

    So…

Session one, take an aluminum foil ball, stick it on a paperclip, cover it with milliput and roughly sketch in where you want things to go.

Now I would also recomend you pause here to let the milliput harden but as I am an impatient gith…

    … do as I say, not as I do…

…so I immediately added the beak.

I also decided to make the tentacles seperately as it’s much simpler to form them ahead of time, and then attach them once they are fully cured, than to try and support them when they are dangling from a figure all soft and stretchy like.

    Session two,

Stick a blob of putty on the bottom and jamm all those tentacles in then draw a bunch of lines on it with your sculpting tool to make the blob look like the hairs / frills on the bottom of the Grell’s body.(see I told you it was much simpler this way.)

Next it was a simple matter of rolling up a bunch of tiny saussages and laying them down in a kind of brain looking pattern.

    Et voila, Grell’s your uncle!

And a quick pic with our helpfull friend the Splintered light beastman for size.

Another monster done, back to the Monster Manual for more! Muhahahahah!!!

    Cheers,

    Stroezie.

Hi my name is Stroezie and I’m a terrainaholic too.

I completely agree, I can’t count the times I’ve made a setup, imagined a bunch of scenarios / stories that could play out on it and then just packed it all away again.

I also have a display cabinet where I create little diorama’s which I swith out from time to time.

I’ve even been contemplating getting one of those coffee tables with a display case in them and building either a 6mm city or a 15mm dungeon into it.

And then off course there’s people building these…

    Help me…  …

I seem to have caught the sculpting bug again.

Best to make the most use of it then.😉

I started of with a conversion of a splintered light Chimera.

Instead of glueing on the three heads I sculpted it a new one and gave it a spiked ball tail, turning it into a Manticore.

I was going for a blend of human and leonine features but it’s been a long time since I’ve tried doing faces and I had forgotten how much I struggle with them.

Even so, I think he looks pretty good on the tabletop, so I am happy with it.

And here’s the little fellow with some paint on him and his cousins flanking him so you can get an idea of what the original mini looks like.

The next two sculpts are going to be another D&D classic, the Carrion Crawler.

This was actually the first monster I ever ran back when I first started playing D&D as a kid, so I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for it.

Now the Carrion Crawler has gone through quite a few desingn changes throughout the various editions and they all had things I liked about them and things I didn’t, therefore mine will be an amalgamation of all of those plus whatever I think looks cool or I think I can pull of within my limited sculpting abilities.

Now, because a number of people have asked about my sculpting process I thought I’d post photos of these session by session.

Be warned ,I am a very unorganised, chaotic builder / sculpter so it might get rough sometimes.

    So first session:

I made an armature out of aluminium foil and promptly forgot to photograph it (don’t worry I’ll get the next one)

Then I covered that in a thin layer of green stuff and roughly sketched in the belly plates and started on adding the legs.

That’s it for the first session.

    Second session.

I added the rest of the legs and started on the head, adding a little more bulk and starting to detail the eyes.

The teeth were also added at this stage.

I used the left over putty to sculpt the first chitin plate and there ends session two.

    Session three:

Here’s that armature I promised you (see I told you it was going to be unplanned and chaotic 😉

Not really much to see there so…

    …back to the sculpting,

I added the mandibles and the euh… …lips I guess,

And did another plate of chitin on its back.

I also decided the rear end was to plain looking so I started adding some detail there too.

    Session four,

more backplates, butt detail and starting to cover the second armature with the first layer of green stuff.

    Session five, more backplates…

    Session six,

finished the first crawler by adding the tentacles and made some serious headway on the second one.

I actually made the tentacles, legs and mandibles ahead of time and let them fully cure before attaching them with a teeny weeny ball of green stuff and some super glue, this greatly sped up the process.

Here’s a picture of the finished crawler next to a Splintered Light beastman to give you an idea of the size.

    Well that’s it for now.

Next time we finish the second one and get some paint on them.

    Cheers,

    Stroezie.

Mixing in milliput makes the putty a little softer and less stretchy, cheese string like. It makes the mix obey my prodding and poking a little better and once it cures you can cut it like green stuff and file it down like milliput.
Also, milliput is much cheaper than green stuff.😉

    Stroezie.

Thanks, I did him in four sessions, but I should have done five or six.
There are some rough spots that could have been avoided if I had been less tired.
Also green stuff tends to work better in thin layers imo.
So I rushed him a little but I wanted to get him finished before we leave on holidays tomorrow 😎.

First we build a metal framework to hold the creature during the summoning process.

Then we mix the four basic elements together to form the sacred “Green Stuff” (50/50 mix milliput / kneadatite)

and with the hard and soft implements we alternately press, poke and caress the putty into a similitude of the creature we wish to conjure.

    Slowly the creature takes form…

untill finally, after much patience and detailed work…       …succes!!!

Now through the use of various mythic pigments, we bring our monster to life.

And lastly we give it a small offering of flock and bind it to this plane of existence with a final “Ard Coat”.

Behold fellow practitionners of the arcane arts: “the Othyug!”

Never shall we have to worry about where to get rid of our excrement again!

Or worry about those pesky adventurers surprising us during number two for that matter.

I decided to experiment a little to see if I couldn’t come up with an idea to make more mushrooms quickly.

After rummaging through the bits box I came up with these.

Different sizes of half beads and .177 and .22 airgun pellets => instant mushrooms.

Not as good looking as my fully sculpted ones  but way faster to make so I’ll take ’em!

I decided to try doing a tree to.

It looks ok but I think I’ll stick to making these  fully by hand as there  is much less of a time save.

On the  minis side of things, I decided that my dark elves lacked leadership so I painted up a priestess and her fiendish bodyguard.

(both are from Splintered light miniatures)

The figure on the ground was made from all the green stuff and milliput leftovers from other sculpting projects.

    Well, that’s it for now.

Next time we learn how to summon monsters…

Just a simple update of the models I managed to paint these last few weeks.
They are all from Ral Partha’s Demonworld line.

I did three more trolls, they are a bit darker then the two previous ones but then these are obviously more civilised and thats enough of an explanation for me. 😉

Another oger cause all good things come in threes.

    A murder of harpies…

More death from above in the form of some savage gargoyles

And last but not least, a dark elf raiding party

    More to come…        …soonish…

I managed to make some more progress on my modular cavern terrain.

I wanted a way to add some elevation so I made some simple risers from foamcore and some wall pieces to go in front of them.

I like them, but I will be experimenting some more I think to break up that ruler straight line.

As I was about to paint the last wall piece I suddenly thought to myself “I could paint this blue and have a little waterfall !” and so…

Then, as a change of pace, I decided to try my hand at some more fungus terrain.

    I made two mushroom trees.

I really like how these turned out and I’ll definately be making more of them.

If people are interested I may even do a little tutorial.

And then of course I couldn’t resist building a little encounter, just to see how it all goes together.

Perfect for a big end battle! 😉

And of course a close up of our two heroes about to enter into an epic battle with their fungal opponents.

    That’s it for now.

Last week we finally got down to making some D&D characters for my wife and daugter.

A Witcher inspired half elf paladin for my little girl and as usual my wife went the furry route and decided to play an Alseid ranger.

Now it was up to me to find them some suitable minis.

Easy enough for the kid, a demonworld elf with an extra scabbard added for his second longsword did the trick.

For my wife’s ranger I started with a demonworld centaur, resculpted the tail and hooves and added antlers and the appropriate female bits.

In their first adventure they have to stop a strange tree creature from harvesting villagers heads. This guy from Splintered light fits the job perfectly.

And what would D&D be without some ogers…

    … and some trolls

And finally, my first ever dragon miniature.

Its a plastic dracolich mini from the first edition decent boardgame.

The details were a bit soft in some places but over al I’m quite happy with how she turned out.

I always thought she looked a bit small next to the other minis in the box, but for 15mm she’s just about perfect imo.

I still need to make some more bits and bobs of terrain and a miniature for the singing tree for  the finale of the adventure and then we’re all set.

    Cheers,

    Stroezie.

I’ve been in a bit of a gaming and crafting funk this last month but now I’ve found my mojo back and I have my 7 year old daughter to thank for it.

She was getting bored sitting at home all the time so I had given her a block of Das clay I had lying around. She took it straight up to her room and about two hours later she presented me with two monsters she’d made and told me I had to paint them so I could use them with my little men.

    How could I refuse…

So here’s the first, a tentacled Lovecraftian horror , which I have been informed is actually only the head of a gigantic subterranean worm.

And the second one, a cave monster who lures greedy adventures into its mouth using large gemstones.

As you can see he’s perfectly camouflaged and blends right into his surroundings.

    They’ll never suspect a thing!

I had so much fun painting these that I kept right on going with some terrain building.

The first things I made were these stalagmite tiles for my cavern set.

Really simple, I just twisted some aluminum foil into the desired shapes and hot glued them to the tiles, some basing sand and paint and Bob’s your uncle.

Going for more easy wins I decided to finally base and paint all my left over green stuff mushrooms.

And then I finally finished painting the board I’m going to be using my dungeon/cavern tiles on.

It’s a magnetic whiteboard which I picked up at a second hand store for the princely sum of  €3.

All the tiles are mounted on magnetic paper so I can set up a scene before a session and not have to worry about things shifting when I pull it out.

As you can see they stay on really well.

    That’s it for now,

I’ll leave you with some glamour shots of the new beasties on the table…

    What’s this? A mushroom grove…

    Or a nursery!

    Parallel worlds or what !?!

Some more figures for my ROSD and D&D games.

    Our story begins with…
    The valiant town guard

I have more of them on the way, just as soon as I get around to cutting of their pikes and then sculpting them some halberts.

    And they are up against…

    some spooky specters

    Three shadowy wraiths

two fierce wights (who apparently frequent the same hair salon as the bride of Frankenstein 😛)

and a whole passel of ghouls and ghasts

    For those of you wondering.
The guards are from Ral Partha’s Blighthaven/Demonworld line.
All the undead are from Splintered Light, exept for one ghoul who is from Alternative Armies.

Well, thats it for this episode.

Ok, first post of the year.

What! Wait where did January go?

Oh well…   there goes that new years resolution…

Let’s see what I’ve been up to then…

First of I’ve been bangin’ away at some more cavern tiles for D&D

As you can see I’m starting to get enough pieces together so that I can build a decent battle scene

I’m thinking of making some water edge tiles to soften the transitions from land to water a bit and then some scatter terrain like stalacmites, mushroom clusters and crystal formations.

On to the miniature painting side then…

No D&D is complete without some Orcs

    More orcs…

And a couple of adventurers to help stop said orcs

This next mini is from the last splintered light kickstarter, when I saw him I pledged immediately,

personally I think it is the coolest looking minotaur miniature you can find in 15mm.

Makes for a really butch end of session bad guy imo.

The next three figures are actually from the old 28mm Rackham line, I think they were supposed to be some kind of air elemental familiars or something.

They make great 15mm guardian spirits though,

the question is “Are they friend or foe?”

I’ve also based and primed a whole bunch of undead so with a bit of luck I should have more pics to share with you soon.

    Cheers,

    Stroezie.

Ps: sorry for the quality of some of the pictures, I have just swapped out all my old lamp bulbs for LED’s and I’m struggling a little to find the right camera settings to compensate.

Yep those Celtos figures always try and tempt me into 28mm too.

I even went and made myself a 15mm Slaine to help me resist.😉

To be honest, having just started gathering minis to do some Slaine adventures I was thinking of starting either with Burning Sands or Rangers of Shadow Deep and tweeking either till it fit.

So I wouldn’t mind at all if you’d care to do the heavy lifting to bring Slaine into Burning Sands😎

    Cheers,

Wow, I have most of those minis, those are some nice conversions!

I really like that templar, not enough respect for a good spear in most games imo.😉

    Cool!

It’s one thing to know you have a good product ,but it’s always nice to get some recognition.😎

Which reminds me, I really should get myself down to the print shop and have them print me a nice properly bound copy so I can give it the place on the shelf  it deserves.

    Cheers,

Oh, I completely agree, these are “sculpting hobbyist” figures like you would find in Alternative Armies SHM line but fantasy instead of scifi. Not comparable to Crom’s Anvil or say Splintered Light’s offerings.

I’m not going to be spending a ton of money on them but there’s a few interesting figures in there and I like giving people a chance.

Also, there’s room for more than one miniature project in my life😋 so I’m willing to take a chance every now and then.

    Cheers,

Leaving aside the question if talk like that is professional or not, I usually regard it as just another form of shit talking at the table, I don’t think anyone really takes that kind of thing seriously.

Also, this guy clearly states that he’s not looking to start a business, this is a one off, more like a vanity project that got a little out of hand so to speak, so I’m willing to cut him some slack.

    Cheers,

    Stroezie.
