Regular visitors cannot really have avoided the fact that there is a funny little show in Sheffield coming up in July called the ‘Joy of Six’. Yes, a show all about 6mm miniatures. A lot of you reading this will be quite happy with the concept, but I'm sure there are those who will be saying to themselves, ‘So what? How is that going to help me find the exact Vallejo paint needed to add the highlights on the eyebrows of my 1807 Vistula legion elites’? You will probably also have one or more of the following thoughts:
- ‘But I won’t be able to walk around yet more those stands selling the same boxes of discounted plastic 28mm figures and barbecued sections of sheet mdf.. Where’s the fun in that?’
- ‘Why 6mm? Surely that’s just an excuse for poor painting and modelling’.
- ‘How can you paint/model/see/play games with anything so small?’
- ‘I don’t do anything but 28/20/15mm. What’s in it for me?’
- ‘6mm? Can’t even see them, never mind paint them!’
Well. Here’s the challenge for you. At the Joy of Six 2017 we are offering FREE entry to anyone who turns up at the door and declares themselves to be a ‘6mm Sceptic’. Yes, free entry to the show. There’s the chance for you to either reinforce your beliefs, or, just maybe get to see what all those wargamers lauding the virtues of the small scale are on about.
Look at this way. You get free entry, and because the trade stands are all carrying 6mm stock only, it’s not going to hurt your wallet by expanding the 40mm/28mm/15mm leadpile. Food is cheap and wargamer friendly and on-street parking is only £1 for the day. In return you get a great day out, get to see some magnificent games, pick up some painting and modelling tips, and socialise with your fellow hobbyists.
As anyone who has ever been to the JOS will tell you, it is a remarkably vibrant and friendly show, with a great atmosphere and with plenty to see and do. Most of the games are participation and those that are not are visual treats. There is a hands-on painting clinic and seminars to attend.
To put icing on the cake, should you actually change your views, declare yourself to be a ‘Reformed 6mm Sceptic’ and cough up the entrance fee, then you’ll get a discount for your first 6mm purchases from the traders.
We challenge you not to love this show!
The Joy of Six 2017 will be taking place in the Heartspace at Sheffield Hallam University on July 16th from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Entry is £3.00 but FREE to all the 6mm sceptics.

Now that is a pretty cool idea.

I’m a hard core 6mm fan but the UK is a bit far and even when I’m there, Sheffield is a bit out of the way. Any chance of a US version?

Given the distance and logistical issues involved, we’ve certainly no means of launching a JOSUS. However, if someone wants to have a go we can give them support and our planning template.

I think its a great idea even though I’m not a sceptic. I am sure that the quality and detail of current 6mm ranges will surprise the ‘6mm Sceptics’. I love my 6mm stuff. Pity Sweden is too remote to make attendng easy!
