I agree with all of the above.  Broheim has all of the various rules and articles organized in a pretty good fashion.  We always picked our warbands based on theme instead of planning for the “best equipment”.  Many of the weapons and equipment are priced too high for practical use, so you’d never take a group of crossbow men or guns instead of bows or slings if you are trying to build an effective warband.  But it is way more fun with crossbows, armor etc. in the mix.  The stat lines for most figures are pretty similar- it’s the equipment, skills and injuries that set figures apart.

We always play the base game plus Empire in Flames.  Very cool setting, your Empire figures could easily make the core of any of the mercenary factions from the base book, and your new Chaos figures probably would make the basis of a Carnival of Chaos Warband from Empire in Flames. The factions in these two books (original + Empire in Flames) are pretty balanced with each other. Many of the other ones are not so much (elves = awesome, dwarves = not so much)

You need a lot of terrain, but it doesn’t have to be ruins. Maybe 10-16 terrain features per game – a farm, a stand of trees, etc. Hired Swords tend to be expensive and do not usually get used much in our games -so we made a house rule that the weaker warband in a match can hire them for half price. We think it helps balance games later in a campaign when some warbands are a lot more powerful. Campaigns are what make the game shine, and breathe life into your figures. For a one-off game I’d play something else.

Almost all of the Warbands have a limit of five or six “Heroes” and groups of 3-5 henchmen that are armed the same. So for example you might have a Captain, two Champions, two Youngbloods, 3 halberdiers and 3 crossbowmen. The three Empire mercenary factions have few special units, but other factions have mages, priests, animals, monster etc. So a Skaven warband might have a wizard, a rat ogre, a pack of giant rats etc.
