Two alternative options:

1 – the method in Martin Wallace’s ‘Waterloo’, where the opposing player draws your activity chit in secret, and when you have used up to this action maximum, your opponent shows you the chit. Or if you have played Space Hulk, imagine the Genestealer player draws the Marine player’s CP-chit secretly.

2 – randomly generate the moment of stopping. so in a DBx-type game, every time you expend a PIP, roll to see if the turn ends. If it would a multi-PIP action, then roll multiple times – if you fail, you can’t do that action but you can take actions for the PIP points you do have (e.g. you try and take a 3-pip action; you roll 3 die and score 4,1,1 – 1 indicating the turn ends; you can take a 1 PIP action instead of a 3-pip action).
