My own sci-fi universe background has been evolving for over half a century.

So it depends on whether you think that Psionics is part of the evolution of human kind or just “space magic” …

…. that FTL is hi-tec or just “a wizard did it” …

… or that the ability to create vat-grown sentients is just necromancy by other means …

… and that my Imperial Guard having infini-feed magazines for their guns using quantum entanglement and pocket universes is just hand-wavium of the worst sort.

Personally, I’m happy to call it sci-fi.
