I agree with NCS that Black Powder, much as I like its layout and its intent, is not the best in terms of understanding how to actually make an inroad into the game. It kind of leaves you to figure things out with very little guide as to what is what, or what the consequences in game terms are of selecting one kind of formation or unit size over another. Much is made of frontage but it’s not explained well in the mechanics of its impact on gameplay and you’re supposed to agree a lot among yourselves, but not a lot of key is given to making that agreement in an informed way.

I do like the Sam Mustafa games, his rules are pretty elegant albeit quite simple.
