I think all painted figures look pretty amazing Mike, old style matt / gloss, new style 3 / 5 colour layered, dipped painting, flat basic painting, super detailed, ink style painting, simple very basic and any of the other styles that that are in use.  I have used various over the past 55+ years and have always been happy with my painting, yes I have gotten better and faster but that is down to practice.  Is my painting better than others I don’t know and I don’t judge everyone who paints figures I think does it for enjoyment.  Are the new styles better again some work faster but all painted figures enmass look fantastic on a wargame table.

I saw a wargame of Waterloo at a wargame show using 12mm figures painted blue for the French, red for the British, it looked fantastic.
