Darkest Star GamesI like the new designs on their own – the aesthetic is consistent and very hard military in its style. But there’s just no comparing to the early, experimental days of 40K. It was more baroque, and clearly hadn’t found a footing yet, which was in some ways rather liberating.
The new designs really do show off “template” type construction, but in a more brutalist fashion than the gothic everyone seems to associate with SM. The Mechanicus and Custodius though are definitely in the Gothic vibe with their vehicles. SM just don’t seem to be as dark and mysterious as they used to be. Personally, I feel like the 40Kverse has become too fleshed-out, too much light in the dark corners.

it was the Howling Griffons camouflage that I always loved. They were my second chapter – my first being the Rainbow Warriors, of course.
My first was the Crimson Fists, then the Ultra Marines (since I had 2 different blues, why not?), then my own chapter that was allied to a Titan Legion. Good times. The camo that caught my eye was the Sons Of Medusa desert camo from the O.G. Chapter Approved book, on the same page as the Howling Griffons figure. Always wondered about that chapter…
