Not least because I’m a fairly ordinary table-top general, I often get crushed. If I minded it, I’d have dumped wargaming for tiddlywinks, years ago (I can tiddle a mean wink).
The worst was I think my first SYW game a number of years ago. The rules (rightly) made my French army a little stodgy in manoeuvre. I marched them towards the enemy in long columns, endeavouring to get close before I deployed in line. In retrospect, a little too close. My opponent fell on my flank & literally rolled up my entire infantry force. Rossbach without the cavalry. I conceded in disarray (a small town in Lorraine).
The appeal of wargaming for me is firstly the spectacle. So, winning or losing is not that vital for enjoyment. I will readily take on a hopeless cause & give it my best efforts. I even sometimes pull it off.
