[Edit] I agree Skip, and a great ‘visitor’ or observer he makes, yet that and other regiments [ Her Majesty’s Life Cuirassiers_] weren’t as I assess them necessarily part of the LeibGard of Alexander… *Edit* Jul-25 Edited and clarified reasoning and comments in a number of places.

A further tangent- but not too far…
Paul I has been severely criticised over his manner, efforts and lets say nicely ‘extremism’ against both elements of his ‘people’ and officers of ‘his’ army.
The 1797 name changing, annulling and renaming of a many regiments, including the LeibGarde appear to me now to have a purpose.
HE as much as anyone wanted to annul the past- those legacy names and titles that had nothing to do with his regency. If we start with his beloved Semenovsky regiment, they hardly had any great love for him if they willingly or by deceit permitted his murder when they were supposed to be his personal body guard!
All those other regiments that were ‘entitled’ and enshrined in his family forebears must have given him angst- thus not only changing names but the new flag redesign and more inportantly, instant replacement in 1797 was effected immediately.
Did such a move antagonise and upset the existing hierarchy too much.
Makes me wonder more, and if anyone in Russian circles has actually highlighted the matter before? Surely?
