I agree wholeheartedly.  However the advanced rules have pike and shot regiments, which although clunky, are better than nothing.  Even DBR, which provides bonuses for shot beside pike, annoys me by allowing shot sleeves to retreat, operate independently or be destroyed while the remainder of the regiment remains.

I also fully agree that there are better ECW games for my tastes out there.  I’m actually in the middle of a For King & Parliament campaign and enjoying that immensely.

As for skirmish, may I suggest Pikeman’s Lament?  It’s part of the Lion Rampant series from Osprey (so relatively inexpensive) and fun, fast and fairly easy to learn.
