Personally I tend towards campaigns more than single battles I guess, but I don’t tend to delve too deeply into specific encounters. Though I always thought it’d be cool to do a super deep dive into a single battle, learn where every unit was and so on.
I never used to do historical battles. Instead, I was very interested in exploring more abstract ideas, trying to create scenarios where the two sides had asymmetric missions (eg, one doing a reconnaissance in force, trying to identify what the other’s mission was: hold in place? delaying action? actually preparing to counterattack? etc). But once a friend got me started on historical refights, I became addicted. I’ve researched a lot of battles in a lot of detail so as to be able to present true recreations of them on the table top.
