My go to with string is to soak it in PVA and let it dry – you get something cheap and cuttable, but also rigid while still retaining flexibility. It’s how I make my trees – just twisted Jute Twine that was soaked in PVA. The material can cope with trees up to 6 inches high before you need to quadruple your string.
that way you wont be tempted to go back on yourself making the fences for a more realistic look
