Hi, well…
- Any Napoleonic rules will do.
- Be aware there are/ were negative biases at play in games rules based on egregious English translations and poor research. The Austrians, on a per unit basis, were no worse than most average French* and shouldn’t get the penalties made on them.
- If anything, the hodge-podge of ‘mixed’ units Nap threw into Austria, with having lost major numbers (infantry) in the 1807 campaign was a demark, many [units] had never recovered their former glory and status.
- The leadership under Erz. Karl 1809 was as motivated as they could ever be (1813 a different political spectrum entirely). Remember he gave Nap his first direct defeat in Europe at Aspern-Essling!
- I’s up to you what ‘changes’ to make and enhancements Austrians gain from tweaking rules.
- Wargame rules are someones interpretation, and are often finely inaccurate in general. They are neither laws nor fact, merely interpretations. Just as the Prussian Army lived on its 7YW laurels, so they fell.
- By 1809 the Austrian Army had learned and absorbed a lot of Nap style of war, and politics. That made a huge difference, but as noted in many texts, they were always there to fight, even when badly led (countless times).
- Erz.Karl should count as an Inspirational and Competant general on the field. So are some of his generals and staff.
* And this written by a dyed-in-the-wool Francophile who’s been researching 1805-07 and playing Napoleonic games for 40+ years…
Good Luck, dave
