The other benefit (of what I take to mean a larger area/zone grid?) is that it presents a less-exact display of where units are on the battlefield: This applies to both land and air (and, I assume, sea) but is most appreciated by me in the air where everything -friends, foes, terrain- is constantly moving, so that the placement of minis only communicates “somewhere around here” instead of the model-in-a-hex tabletops that (while not intentionally representative of it) imply a distinct location.
…WW2 aerial combat…wingmen were critical, that height was important, that aces ruled the sky and that formations made a crucial difference…perhaps B&Z might manage that trick.
I won’t venture speaking for him, but these do seem to be the facets emphasized by Joe in B&Z.
