I was thinking Polyfilla on mdf, painted and ‘flocked’ with sand (kiln dried, silver or beach, not builder’s).

Not really practicable for large pieces – the Polyfilla would probably shrink and crack. There’s also the weight.

 

DAS Pronto would be an alternative. Probably more expensive though.
