You should ask him where he purchased his copy of ESR from, as the official rules have no requirement for bases to have to cut it.
Maybe he can send his copy to you, and you will replace it with an official copy rather than the odd one he has?
The responder on Facebook was just commenting on the look of the photos from the people who were playing ESR, he wasn’t commenting on the ruleset. His comment wasn’t as to if the basing scheme was any good but rather that he didn’t like the style of their bases, i.e. you don’t terrain them to my liking.
