As Hwiccee said, neither side was inclined or able to fight a pitched battle in the field.

At the beginning of the war the strategy was to hold a base of operations. Charles needed to hold a sea port in the Midlands or South – Bristol and Hull had declared for Parliament. The opening gambit was to deny the other side arms and money – Parliament held many of the armouries too, so Charles’s army was short of weapons and the money to pay for them.

Then both sides blundered into the battle that they wished to avoid at Edgehill…
