Hi there, just my two-penny worth, but I would stress that French North Africa was much a more ‘civilised’ area than what we normally associate with warfare in the ‘Desert’ – think colonial farms, well stocked with neat, white-washed buildings, a lot of stone walling (much more mountainous terrain) and even relatively decent roads.

Not a lot of palm trees here or oases – more orange and olive groves, stone built cisterns – and don’t forget the odd Classical era ruin or Moslem tomb….. Terrain is hilly, scrubby, full of thorn bushes – stony folds in the ground – not wide open sand dunes….

It’s mostly pretty green rather than yellow, and more importantly, can turn very, very muddy after the not infrequent rains…….
