Good points, Brasidas19004. By and large both armies in Thomas’ rules are equal in size. So an underdog army in those rules has the same amount of units, but much worse quality, equipment, tactics and worse leadership.
It really put a damper on our rough thoughts about branching out into the Crimea or 1866! The Russian or the Austrian player would have very, very little hope of winning.
But, as mentioned, we have been playing our 1859 armies using “From Shako to Coal Scuttle” to great effect! I suspect playing Crimea or 1866 under those rules would also be a lot of fun,
