Not that remote for me! My grandad started in the RFA at Loos in 1915. He suffered regular coughing fits where his lungs were damaged by gas at Passchendaele. He didn’t tell me a great deal either. He only found out his lifelong friend was also on the Somme the year before he died. They spent most of their lives working and socialising together, including service in the Home Guard, without mentioning it.
