Now, in a belated attempt at answering the original question, I suggest that even the exagerrated ranges quoted are no longer than those that would apply in WW2 armour combat, and so it seems reasonable to me to use the ground scale my group always seem to use for that, 1mm to the metre. This means a kilometre is conveniently a metre, but CQB range of 30m still a perceptible distance on the table. Sections using proper tactical spacings on stands 50mm by 25mm occupy an area on the table not wildly out of proportion, and we do this with 1/76th scale models (yes, proper traditionalists).
