it was, in the scheme of things, an oddly new idea for the train troops (of any variation, including those running limbers and such) to even be part of the military.


And also: manning the guns, and driving/taking care of the carriages, were almost two different jobs. And the “train d’artillerie” was not a completely different organisation, its task was to work with the gunners, so the men probably were trained for it. It was different from the “train des équipages” and the “train du génie”.
