I think John James really ‘got it’ as far as the interface between magic and day to day living in the Ancient World. I first read his work in the 70s, caught up with the whole output when it was republished in the 80s and many decades and scores of scholarly tomes later I’d say he was pretty much bang on. I would recommend James to anyone.
There’s also a very evocative passage in Henry Treece’s The Dark Island that’s worth a look. Although Treece, unlike James, didn’t really know much about the native society he atmospherically conjured up for his readers.
