I like an element of chance in my games. I like to be surprised. Even better if the surprise is amusing. But I want the amount of chance to be manageable by the players, not so drastic as to reverse the course of play and thwart a players’ best efforts. Even though that often happens in Real Life. But when I’m playing a game, I want the outcome to be determined by the players’ decisions, not by a big rock suddenly falling from the sky. ‘Cos it’s a game, not Real Life.
