For my clear plastic stream sections I stained the undersides a sort of mashed avocado green so the underlying table colour shows through but it is filtered by the greenish blue. That seems to work quite well.

My proper river sections are like Ochoins, dark blue in the middle, light blue at the edge and finished with satin (not gloss) varnish.
