Can you put the puzzle back together?: Should a unit selected for scouting be allowed to re-constitute itself back into a combat unit?
I would think that the number of men selected as scouts would not be significant in a mass battle. I would also presume that they would rejoin their units after their scouting duties were complete or remain as forward observers as the battle unfolded. Now, sending out a formed forlorn hope is a different matter.
I don’t know much about the Mahdist wars, though. Were entire combat units designated for scouting duties? If so, were they selected for scouting because their combat effectiveness was inconsequential? In short, reconstituting a scouting unit for combat is something that doesn’t sit quite right. It would take some historic examples to convince me.
