I play almost exclusively in 3mm and it really isn’t that different from 6mm. It does allow you to build a game with a smaller footprint, so if you are an apartment dweller like myself, that might be a consideration.
As for labels, experiment a bit and see what works for you. You can paint a wash over thick paper and still print on it, so don’t feel you are constrained by your printer’s color schemes.
Here are some Brits in 3mm, which I did years ago but which would be perfect for Rommel:
The labels are printed and placed on painted cardboard strips, which are glued to the back of the stand with a dab of white glue, reinforced by a small bit of paper on the bottom. This way, I can pop them off and replace them as needed.
