Do you buy or build flight stands for aircraft (I am thinking of 1/600 aircraft, but I assume the question could apply more widely)?  If you build them, which method do you use?

In Clouds of Glory has an interesting idea. It only works for light models though.

Irishserb has a good idea for 1/300 which is close to my old design. His uses a dowel while mine used antennae which are no longer available.

One mod I would make is I used 1/4″ thick steel bases (Offsetting the weight of 1/285 F-14s is a bugger) with a hole near one corner. Tapped and thread or just drill and fix the dowel in place.

I use regular plastic flight stands.  Saw the peg off the top, glue on a 1/32″ round ND magnet, and another on the base of the aircraft.  Works great.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I make mine from 40mm panel pins with the tip dremmeled off, an mdf hex or square depending on the rules, and an mdf dice frame glued on the base. Very cheap, quick to do and easy to use with mini magnets on your model. There’s also no issue with polarity and you only use one magnet per plane. There’s a how to on my blog somewhere…</p>

I made my own. MDF and piano wire, with alu tube of different lengths to show altitude

I build mine using 2mm mdf bases and 1.5mm diameter vine wire.

The planes have a small circular magnet glued to them that has a hole in it.  This then holds it to the vine wire. Here’s a double stand I’m experimenting with:

That’s a really interesting way to do it, pretty cool especially if you can bend them to make different altitudes or attitudes.
