I think the issue is they are fantasy tiles, they are quite raised and resemble these in the flesh.

Fantasy Tiles! Made of fantasy. In the end pant them however looks best, is the answer!

Of course wouldn’t you know I just happened to see this:

So there seems to be no wrong answer.

Aye. I am hoping the red will look better as all grey may be just dull?

This is for Warhammer, yes? Then it has to be red.

    Sorted the first olde field.
I needed a field that looked pretty (ish) but also allowed bases of troops to enter it.

However sometimes you just need to go old school.
I want some flagellants for my army and commissioned my regular sculptor who does my 15mm to do me some.

Here is a quick photo before I send them off to the casters to be moulded

    And here are test masters.

Love the roof there – dark red was a good choice.

Ta, bit bored of units and terrain so I did a quick one off model.
Slowly it grew on me, I think this chap whom I have named Stefan will be present on all my battlefields and he will be the teller of tales and rememberer of battles.

It is a converted wagoneer, I added a drinking horn and stuck him on a barrel.

Started to populate my page with some images and background fluff.
Not much, but it is a start.

Are they RPE’s Ice Witches? I must say they look much more muscular than on RPE

Your pike look very nice. The feathers are a nice touch

Don’t know the product, where would this move your games and why?

So it is a WFB 2nd edition campaign setting, but even though written for WFB it suits WFRP much more.
It details the area of the Riding and its 3 main villages plus the local area.

It feels more olde English and has some of the ‘funny’ names that GW used to use.
My campaign is/was to be set near Sylvania which is very grimdark.

The 2 as they stand are not compatible, I may change the names of the places and people so I can use the book in the desired setting, or I may move it.
I will decide once it is here and I have reacquainted myself with it.

I see.  If everything you’ve aimed for is down Sylvania way then porting the details of the Riding is probably the thing to do.  Always good to have more flavor!

Made a few roads to be getting on with.
Looks nicer than a plain table and I have a house rule for roads and units.

That is just my mini board for small skirmish games, not my bigger battle board for the armies.

Just found a blog post that details how The Riding was later altered by GW and re-named and re-located to Sylvania.
    Great minds eh.

    Flagellants:

I want to do black as that will look best I feel, in terms of contrast with my army.

Lore wise, I figured Morr as those priests are close to death and see the frailty and indeed the pointlessness of life daily.
They can see that material wealth and riches and vice give you no advantage over the paupers, they all rot in the ground.
They all wear the same black rose.
No matter what you have or did you lose it all, so why bother living a good life, in fact, maybe living a good life is worse.
You have less to lose when poor and wretched, so maybe that is the way, if you have it all then death is cruel and it takes it away from you.
Why would that be a good thing, why work so hard to be cheated and be worse off, worse off for all eternity.
Maybe, yes, thinking about it, maybe have a poor pious life, have no money, no property, be hungry and wretched, then when death comes it is not to be feared, but to be welcomed, a release from the life of suffering.
Infact, thinking about it, the greater the suffering the sweeter the release of death.
Pain and madness shall be our daily bread, torment and anguish, and then when blessed Morr comes, he shall taken us away to a life of eternal bliss.
But yes, to appreciate this afterlife, for it to have any meaning the life must be wretched and terrible.
Whips and chains to weigh the body, pages of sacred verse nailed into the very flesh, bleeding feet and unkempt hair, manacles and maces.
These shall be our holy sacraments.
These shall lead us to true salvation!!

My unit cards for my Empire army so far:

    Not much more to go.

    So because I am a fool…

    My cavalry are up next.
I had a look round to see what official lot to go for and came across the Knights of the Black Rose.
They are connected to Morr, which ties in nicely with my flagellants.
They are also black with will look good next to my black robed Morr fleglers.

I have some shieldless models from kallistra.
So I spoke nicely to Leon at Pendraken who sold me a load of separate kite shaped shields.
(As the KOTBR have kite shaped shields.)

    So, lances = check
    Kite shields = check
    Plate armour = check
    Suitable colour scheme = check
Skull faced helmets as per WFB 6th edition Empire army list = arse

So guess who is hacking up a load of skulls to file and convert my cavalry into KOTBR..

It took this unit I am working on to make me suddenly realise I am playing fantasy. Until now the Empire troops had seemed so very reasonable and not fantastic.

Fantasy is in the figures – not the mind?  Please discuss

I’m happy to have hordes of humans running around and the odd ‘invisible’ magic spell but nothing beats a special figure or two.  For me – giants or dragons where the go-to figures to lift a game in my imagination.

Those mounts are going to be useless in a fist fight though (OK – I’ll get my hat and coat)…

    Ha.

I guess using a lot of historicals as my Empire just lends them historicalness?
The cavalry a bit less so as I converted them to have skull helmets and added some green stuff skulls and motifs on the barding.
But for the most part they look quite plausible as historical dudes.

But suddenly these giant green lizards just stood out.
Maybe I need an orc army…

    :/
