    The 83rd Regiment of Foot was raised in Ireland in 1793 as part of the British build up for the war with France and was soon given the ironic nickname of “Fitch’s Grenadiers”.

    The second battalion sent to Portugal in April 1809 with a certain Sir Arthur Wellesley would soon prove its metal in battle showing themselves as true grenadiers and becoming one of the veteran battalions of the Duke of Wellington’s Peninsular Army.
