It has been a week since my last post (games 1 to 5) and I am on track, playing another 7 games – playtesting solo friendly ancient rules and programmed opponent. Less rules changes than before and getting into the swing of it. Lots of fun. The dry reporting of the games and lessons learnt along the way is at this blog post:

One of the games was Goths Vs Byzantines. Here is the cavalry clashing:
Hi Shaun, a very interesting post, I like seeing how rules evolve.
The fascinating thing about play testing is how situations pop up that seem obvious when they pop up …. but not so much when the rules are being written in the first place.
Could any of the One Hour wargame (Neil Thomas) scenarios be called upon to meet your needs, with say a doubling (or more) of units?
It is always interesting when odd situations come up. it is also partly why I chose to play the Peter Sides’ histroical scenarios as they should throw up interesting situations I had not thought of when writing the rules.
The One Hour Wargames Scenarios would be ideal. I had considered using the scenarios for the 30 games in 30 days. You could double the units but earlier in the year I drafted how to play Ancient Battlelines Clash on a 30cmx30cm with only about 4-8 units (the only real change is reducing all distances) . I actually did this with the intention to play a few of the One Hour Waargames scenarios, but the 30cmx30cm rules remain untested. The 1’x’1′ rules are are after the download section in the ABC rules page on my blog.
Hey Shawn.
Wow 30 in 30!!! You’re a star Shaun…an ancient one 😉
Playing with your own rules too…impressive…
I’d love to play ancients but I’m not even using my own stuff right now but I’d like to think in the future I might get the time..

Hey John!
[forgot to say I was covering off two Johns with the last post]
Panda, I am one day behind so I am 13 games in 14 days right now. No idea when I can catchup.
