Just what I need is another project but a friend of mine told me he’d play 3mm scale if I did the Battle of Calth, so I’m calling his bluff. The units are prints but remarkably sharp for that. I’m basing in ten man squads, which feels better for this even though it’s non-canon.

But they do look goodhttps://jimssfnovelsandwargamerules.wordpress.com/
27/11/2023 at 20:26 #192904Mr. AverageParticipantHah! Well, we all have our crosses to bear. I think they look very smart with the base label, just a very minimal one. Just a visual marker really.
27/11/2023 at 22:54 #192908Andrew BeasleyParticipantVery neat – the number of figures look about right for those bases.
Not convinced the regimented ranks are right for the ‘period’ (I’ve always seen SMs as fighting individually not in formation) but to give a scattered look you would have to drop the figure count or increase the base size…
Will you be using dice for wound tracking or just go for full base removal (come to that – what rule set are you planning one)?

29/11/2023 at 00:54 #192942Mr. AverageParticipantI like how chunky they are. They verge on cartoony but it works!
As for rules I’m looking for something that will handle large scale so full bases get removed and the battle occurs at the scale of a whole company. I’m basing first and figuring out the rules later.

It also looks way too bright under my work light – it’s more of a very pale blue grey in reality. But I might go ahead and make it blue anyway. We’ll see.

I think the number of figures looks perfect. I like the unit identifier on the back of the base.
If I needed another project it would definitely be along these lines in 3mm!Tally-Ho! Check out my blog at…..

This approach scares me..
Me too, and the ten men per base in three ranks ended up being way too much of a pain to paint. I have an alternate idea now.
10/01/2024 at 08:01 #194068Jim WebsterParticipantIt’s a problem with basing. In a dangerous environment people spread out.
I saw this, which is the military unit advancing and which is a bunch of girls shopping 😉

10/01/2024 at 20:26 #194082Mr. AverageParticipantThat’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen!
For me, since I base my troops at 3mm scale and then conceal the little plinths they’re on. It’s painting between the ranks that is such a pain for me. With five men, you can space them out enough to get a brush through. When they’re in rows there’s always an angle you can’t hit and I just got tired of trying.
13/01/2024 at 23:31 #194161Mr. AverageParticipantGot my first prototype for the Word Bearers done. I think it will work quite nicely.
That red is actually a bit of a challenge but it worked in the end!14/01/2024 at 00:23 #194162MikeKeymaster16/01/2024 at 18:58 #194260Darkest Star GamesParticipantI’m with Mike, the white worked just as well as the toned down grey. The Word Bearers are quite dark to my eyes.
Say, what’s that interesting plane in the background? Looks like some pseudo-Luftwaffe contraption, or perhaps something from The Sky Crawlers…

16/01/2024 at 22:10 #194262Mr. AverageParticipantIt’s a plane from an advance copy of the game Dockfighters, which I meant to paint but life intervened and sent me instead to another country. I intend to come back to that.
17/01/2024 at 21:47 #194288Mr. AverageParticipantBy the way, also visible is the foot of a Tavshar Archon, from Alternative Armies. Real bear to assemble but a very cool figure. I should come back to that project – sci fi Sengoku Jidai. With proper 3mm scale “conventional force” figures it’d be a very cool game, just need some rules to play it with.
18/01/2024 at 15:20 #194303Darkest Star GamesParticipantjust need some rules to play it with
Well, seems the new GW rules should fit as it has big walkers and tiny troops…
I do really like the Tavshar mechs, they’re really cool looking. It’s a shame that the versatility of multipart also means these sorts of models end up very fragile. I have the same problems with my SpecSec mechs. I think in the future I will design mechs to have a couple of limited poses by using mortis and tenon jointures, with there being a few slots for the tab to fit into so an arm could be in 1 of 3 positions, or some such.

18/01/2024 at 22:56 #194310Mr. AverageParticipantYeah, mine are pinned with a whole lot of steel wire, and glued up with two-part epoxy, which is the bane of my existence.
