ParticipantOver on the blog I have my first attempts to scratch build spacecraft for A Billion Suns. This is to keep this new project alive while I don’t really have the funds to support purchasing fleets of gorgeous miniatures. I guess I am making some civilian craft as objectives and they might be useful as generic utility ships also.

ParticipantThese are a great start! I had a lot of fun scratchbuilding ships for Infinite Dark out of whatever I had to hand. Here are a couple of my better offerings:

ParticipantGreat work chaps and this setting lends itself very well to scratch built ships etc.

Participant@ Robey, I see you have parts from the EM4 mechs there, and one of those party bag plastic spaceships on the other one. My bits box is severely lacking in useful bits like that, but I have had a little extra inspiration about where to source cheap space-ship looking things.
Also, your new rules look interesting and as a HW player I might give them a whirl when funds become available.
@ Mike. Battle Beyond the Stars is a true classic, and while I haven’t watched it in probably 20 years, I have such fond memories of it.

I’ll tell you what: get these minis finished and let me use the pics in a blogpost and I’ll send you a free PDF.

Can’t argue with that

No, I cannot argue with that. Here is the update. They are primed (unpictured) and just need to be brought to life.
I have flight stands made from a nail in a base. And tiny magnets to attach them.

MemberI like the look of these. I’ve even more impressed by how straight those nails are in the bases.

ParticipantHere are my finished spacecraft. I am pleased with how they have turned out. My guess is they will more than likely be objectives in games/collateral damage potential in certain scenarios.

MemberI like the unloaded one too. I tried to do something like these but could never get the functional look, I always over do it and over clutter the thing.
How did yuo get teh nails to be perfectly upright? When I tried they’re always at a slight angle.
Did you hammer it all the way through and clip off the points? The nails came off pretty easily when I only hammer the points in.04/06/2021 at 21:59 #157242Thuseld
Participant@Thomaston, I literally just hammered the nail in until I could see a little bulge at the bottom. Then smoothed it out. The bases are thick enough to hold it upright. I had been expecting to glue two layers of MDF together to keep it all upright so I am really happy, and probably lucky. These ships are very light though. I do wonder if it might come loose over time, or with a heavier miniature on top.
