ParticipantI put together a Qajar Persian Army in 15mm. It has a wide variety of troop types that should make for challeging and fun games.
They will provide opposition for Afghans, Sikhs, Ottomans, British and Russians.
If it is of interest here is the link.

ParticipantInteresting. I had been under the impression that Talon & Claw were for the GNW. It appears I may have been mistaken – I see that it also covers the Venetian/Ottoman Cretan war.
Lovely painting – those Irregular turned out very well. Does T&C offer painting guides for the Persians? Any decent, albeit reasonably priced books on uniforms of the Persian of the time?

ParticipantNo Tony, you are correct about Talon and Claw. I think it will adapt easy enough though. I think I have a link for uniforms let me get back to you.
Chris Flaherty has deleted his Qajar Army page. Maybe because he produced a book on the subject. However, I can find no trace of it.
That said try a search for Qajar Persian Army images and you can see many of the uniform plates.
Hope that is of some help.

ParticipantIt has possibilities Jim. I think using the many irregulars to distract and hinder the foe while the regulars do the clever stuff might be the way to go.

Yes we’ve seen this with later Indian armies, where the regulars cannot be ignored, but if used correctly the irregulars can be useful as well 🙂

ParticipantThat’s interesting. I’ve been thinking of basing my Sikh Gorchurra cavalry as irregulars/tribal. While they were happy enough to charge their default drill was wave attacks with mounted musketry. There is a lot to think about.

ParticipantI’m nearing the end of my current project (WW1 Austrians, because I like providing victories for my friends) and am waffling over the next project. It’s been narrowed down to either a Crusader-ish army (Lusignan Cypriot) in preparation for the appearance of Lion Rampant 2, or the Indian Mutiny, because it’s interesting.
And since the British of that era fought the Persians, and since I now see how spectacular the Persian Army looks, and how interesting its composition is…this decision is becoming more difficult.
Especially since Mike was kind enough to mention that Wargame Vault resource. That seems like a fantastic book!
Of course, a proper wargamer would simply get both…

ParticipantA proper wargamer would point out to himself that Persia isn’t that far from India of the Mutiny so the obvious thing to do is get all the armies in between so everybody has properly authentic opponents 😉

If you do buy both, as a proper wargamer would, Irregular Miniatures Army packs will save you a satisfying of amount of money.

Sweet Mother. I just went to order the book and nearly fell over at the UPS charges. Here’s the screenshot, just to prove I’m not hallucinating:
And, unbelievably, UPS will also add customs, taxes and brokerage fees on top. I’m thinking Purolator Ground might be the way to go…
PS – I was particularly taken with the author’s description of the book. To wit, “This book details the Persian military before and after their regular reforms and describes their weapons, uniforms, organisation, battles and campaigns over 164 pages, 657 illustrations, 12 maps and an unknown number of undetected typos.” A most honest man!
