ModeratorOn the 1st of July postage rates for goods going to the USA will increase by roughly 40 to 50%.
This is due to the USPS charging other countries more for delivering overseas mail once it reaches US soil. The USA now has unique postal costs to reflect the USPS price increase, the USA was in Zone 1, it is now in it’s own Zone, Zone 3.

ParticipantThat really sucks. I think that Amazon has really been putting a hurt on the USPS financially.

ParticipantOuch! 20% + increase in postage. Are they trying to drive customers away?

This is political…. and around how international postag works as I understand it. International rates are worked out internationally, so that developing countries have a bit of a leg up, so shipping from UK to US should be more expensive than shipping from Thailand to US. However there are some in the US who see that as a bad thing due to the rise of (not Amazon) Alibaba…and want to target that with what they can control. This is the wider impact of national protectionism on a world stage with no care for the little players.
It will not impact on shipping from US hubs I guess so people like GW will not be impacted as they have local shipping only after the bat, but small companies will be stung. I would expect retaliation from Chine Post in time…
Sorry for the politics there…was an interesting thing on BBC Radio 4 about international shipping about 12 months ago and the US view (read politicians not people) about the unfairness of the current treties.

ParticipantYou’ve out done yourself Mike. That piece is magazine worthy. Heck, if you had the hankering you could probably sell finished pieces like this at a premium.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s from a Pegasus Hobbies 1/72 scale banana plant sprue that I sent Mike at one point, with a selection of other plastic plants I’ve been obsessively amassing too many of.

ParticipantThank you. I think I may soon be undertaking a similar amassing!

Wot? No naked Eydis? She would make a good dolly along with Erland

ParticipantWill you be doing a Southern Seas addition to Burning Sands? I’m sure it is perfectly doable with what all is already contained, but perhaps a set of scenarios would be of an interest for the masses…?

ParticipantGiant statues of the Elders, eg Easter Island. Of course the elder aren’t necessarily human…
01/07/2020 at 11:37 #139289Steelonsand
ParticipantSeconding the Easter Island vibe – if the desert lands have a feel of sort of a Classical civilisation gone to seed, the I feel the Southern Oceans have to have a very different feel…..
Something more Eldritch, Cyclopean, ….Alien, even – certainly beyond the usual experience of Erland and Eydis -. A new world for them to explore – talking of New World – how about a sort of Aztec/Mayan feel –I’m a sucker for those ‘Ancient Aliens’ documentaries on TV – crystal skulls, Nazca lines etc etc – maybe a world something like that?

If you’re going down that route how about a step pyramid and ballcourt?

MemberHalf-overgrown road markers, the road itself having been reclaimed by nature (though some evidence of it may still remain in the way the vegetation grows).
TBH, though, you’re going to keep getting similar answers every time you ask for swords-and-sorcery terrain suggestions. Statues, standing stones, ruins, burial sites. We have the same ideas you’ve already thought of 🙂

ParticipantIn my own stuff I go more to an Indian Ocean style but heavily mixed up. Real world southern India (especially Kerala), Madagascar and Zanzibar with it´s myriads of different people, respective architecture and ways of living. Also stuff from the old Khmer Empire – Angor style ruins and statues.
But again mixed in way it´s not immediately obvious and heavily “barbarized/hyborianized”.
So, maybe a few different styles of small boats and huts, something like the Yasovarman temple and the Marayur dolmen (which could serve nearly everywhere in an fantasy setting).PS: don´t forget the deserts – there´s still much to explore there (like a villa/palace for Yasmina)

MemberDid you get around to watching Ong-Bak 2, which (unless I misremember) I recommended to you at some point? I know martial arts films probably aren’t your thing, but it’s got some nice southeast Asian scenery and costumes in it, and it’s set in swordfighting times with plenty of macho savagery going on. Ong-Bak 3 is probably worth watching for similar reasons, though I haven’t seen it myself yet and I’ve heard it’s less good as an actual martial arts romp. You can skip the first film if you’re simply not interested in the martial arts dimension of the Ong-Bak franchise, as it’s set in the modern day and has practically no connection to the sequels. It does happen to be the best martial arts film ever made, but I digress.
