After the Fiasco show on Sunday we tried out Gaslands for the first time, it was great fun and we learned a few things about driving fast in built-up areas. There’s more pics and thoughts on my blog (along with a video of the Fiasco event):

Looks like a fun game and it brings back happy memories of that time someone shot my tyre out in Car Wars and my car flipped and rolled and wound up sticking out of the side of the first floor of a building in Midville. Good times. I’ve been thinking about returning to Midville with Gaslands. A bit of an urban rumble could be fun, even if it does involve having to drive a bit more slowly. It might make a good ‘catch the courier’ game.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Cheers Ruarigh, it was indeed a very fun game! I used to play Car Wars as well, but I can’t remember for the life of me how it was played, but I know we always enjoyed it. Gaslands is a great pick up and play game, but I need to work out the best way to lay out terrain!

I dug out my Car Wars stuff the other day and was looking through it with a view to setting up a game. The thing that puts me off is the phased movement. It slows the game down massively, where the templates in Gaslands are quick and simple. I would be all over a game that was a halfway house between the two. I want the vehicle design of Car Wars with a less cumbersome and slow movement system.

I am sure it can be done.  I know they are working on a new CW edition, maybe it’ll be designed for faster play.

Have not yet tried gaslands, but just might have to get it for a friend and see what he says, as he’s a Car Wars aficionado, but like said above CW does tend to drag.

I’m sure you could design cars in Gaslands, it would just need a bit of jiggery-pokery, there’s a reasonable amount of design with weapons and extras anyway.

You probably could. I find the design sequence a little basic though. I spent ages designing cars in Car Wars because the design options were so flexible and you could design your cars for a variety of different driving styles very easily, down to deciding where to put the armour and how much to put on each side.

What a great looking game!  I didn’t even think of an ruined urban environment.   That said, even with a relatively open race they we tried the past Sunday, there were a lot of collisions!    Which it seems was your experience too – except for your opponent that is.  One of the boys has a huge Stalingrad collection; perhaps if we’re in a kamikaze sort of mood, we’ll put his stuff on the table next time!

I heard about the new Car Wars coming out, but I don’t think it can beat Gaslands for the game play.  The dice and templates not only streamline play, but add a lot of decisions and friction, and therefore excitement.

And your cars look even better in situ

Cheers Tony. The idea for an urban encounter came from the pictures in the rules, TBH. I’m not sure I would recommend having the table as packed as I did, we barely got above gear three at any point!

Thanks, the other three cars were painted by Dean and they look excellent imo
