ParticipantThere used to be a gaming group in Scunthorpe itself.
Don’t know if it’s still going.
[a quick online look suggests Lost Legion? Great Farm Community Centre – there’s a Facebook page which is private with no contact details – there’s a YouTube video which suggests its mostly (all?) Fantasy/SF].

That’s NORTH of the Humber – we’re Yellow Bellies around here – home of the BEST sausages in the country 🙂
There is a D&D group at Game in Scunthorpe – meets Thursday evenings
There was a group at Barton (upon Humber) but that was before the C19 – not heard if they are back or not.
Edit: FORGOT there is a computer gaming group (aimed at ‘youngsters’ but all welcome) on a Saturday in the library (that’s embarrassing as my son helps run it). (end edit)
There are plenty of gaming places to shop in Lincoln and Hull has a few – Scunthorpe is a little lacking (one SciFi / Collectables shop with a bit of GW) so paint etc is a pain (Boyes in Brigg / Barton have some Vallejo). Grimsby has a good shop near McDonalds note the M180 / A180 is a very noisy road.
The Scunthorpe town centre is a bit dead with the big Tesco / M&S and B&Q being close together by the football stadium and a big ‘The Range’ about a mile from here – the big Asda will be up the road from you. Library service good (ask for Press Reader access for lots of magazines) and the swimming pool in Scunthorpe is clean and warm. Phone service can be spotty – we get Vodaphone just and O2 a little better but you are closer to civilisation than us.
Oh yes – the water is very high in calcium (its ‘hard’) so you may need to change your soaps when you come (sorry been to many years since I was working your way to remember).
Hope the move goes well.

KeymasterHope the move goes well.
Cheers, still waiting on the legal shizz, but fingers crossed.
The mother in law will be moving in as she is properly ill and requires help around the house, which currently she does not get as she lives alone.
On the plus side, the house is big enough I get a dedicated games room, so once settled in expect regular games AARs and stuff.21/12/2022 at 14:56 #181381Darkest Star Games
ParticipantSounds like you’ve found a nice place, with a game room to boot! Bit of a shift from the SW side of the isle, hope there’s no culture shock. 😀

ParticipantAdditional to Andrew’s comments, Lincoln has 3 independent gaming shops in the city centre. A model shop on Steep Hill, which does a small amount of GW and Warlord. Plus traditional hobby stuff, trains and RC cars and the like. A Warhammer shop and just outside the city centre is Imps Gaming.
Kev from Bridge Models also lives Barton way.Tally-Ho! Check out my blog at…..

ParticipantThe are clubs in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster too. Not sure about Thorne.
Again, it may be too much of a drive, even with the motorway network.

KeymasterThe mother in law lives on the other side of Bristol to us and with her numerous illnesses and disabilities and her incurable but currently in remission cancer she needs someone to live with her to help her get by day to day and provide care, we have been trying for 4 years to get her sheltered accommodation near to us and nothing has come up.
So she needs to move in with us.
Charlotte was at a special school to help with her autism and other things, but the special school was actually causing her harm so we have pulled her out and she is being home educated again.
We need a house that:Is big enough for 4 people.
Has the facilities for the mother in law all on the ground floor, bedroom, living room, wet room and wc etc.
It needs to be closer to the mother in laws son, so he can help with the care.
It needs to be within commuting distance of Halifax for Samantha.
It needs to be quiet enough for Charlotte whilst not being too isolated. It needs to be big enough for Charlotte to have her own space, and for myself and Samantha, and space for the mother in law.
There are a lot of people with special needs to be factored in.
Having the mother in law move in so I can take care of her whilst also looking after Charlotte will be stressful as heck, so it was agreed that I get a hobby room to escape to when I need a break from being a full time carer for 2 people. It also needs to be within our limited budget and as we have accepted an offer on our house from a cash buyer, and with the market being as slow as it is, we need somewhere we can move into quick sharp.
There are of course other factors, but for the requirements and budget there are not many options.
I would prefer to live on an island off the coast of Scotland all isolated drinking rum and playing warhammer but thems the breaks!
Good luck!
Cheers!!
😀

This is still a future possibility though, so don’t give up on that dream. It is a good dream, and attainable. And also good that you have some time until then to prep your liver for the abuse… I mean *flavorful enjoyment* it will be subjected to. 😀

That’s almost 2 hours one-way! (If I have the right town) She may need her own flat there!

ParticipantIt is about 80 minutes at the time she would be leaving in the morning.
Sorry to have to tell you that it probably won’t be.
I travel to Halifax on the M62 once per month, on average, from that side of the country. I do not look forward to it. A combination of the constant roadworks with average speed cameras (not that we often reach that speed) and the (not very) smart motorway, results in a nightmare journey more often than not. A couple of months ago it took me two hours just to get off the M62 at J26. Civilisation had broken down at Chain Bar roundabout. Every person for themselves!
Check the traffic on Google maps at the time Samantha intends to travel. Most of the time it’s red, or worse, between Js 26 to 28. How people cope who do that journey on a daily basis I do not know. Let’s hope that Samantha’s experience is better than mine.

We did.
Plus it is not daily so even if it is a bit longer then it is not the end of the world.

ParticipantHaving had a site in Leeds, a hot desk in two sites in Manchester and irregular visits to Liverpool I have to say it’s not an easy journey but with care and a good radio station it’s doable. It may be worth trying the journey for real a couple of times before committing to the Google route (M18 / A1 Leeds can be easier as can Sheffield / Leeds)?
The busy spots are around Leeds and Bradford (daughter was at Uni there) and there is no way around the queue I’m afraid. I kept a set of clothes in the boot and a list of hotels / B&Bs and used them in winter rather than risk travel some nights.
Is the M62 worse than the Portishead M5 area – not really just longer… It was lots easier than trying to get to Edinburgh via the A1 any day!
Scunthorpe to Leeds was fine by train – no idea if that’s still a valid option though and busses to Halifax always smelt bad 🙁
It’s been way to many years since I’ve been to Eureka – youngest is now 30+ (eek / whimper)… I still remember the hour long tour around the inside of an off-duty ambulance – fascinating and a lot nicer than the last time I was in one.

ParticipantI didn’t mean check the journey time Mike. I may well be wrong, but I think that Google journey times assume that you can travel at the speed limit at every point in your journey. I meant check the traffic tab which shows you where the hold ups are. Always red or dark red around Leeds & Bradford during the day.

KeymasterI have arrived up t’ north.
Games room furniture is on order and hopefully in a couple of weeks it will be ready to game in.It is as with all things gamey, a constant WIP, but at least it will be functional.
I have never until now had a place I can leave things set up and come back to later, I am indeed very lucky.
I hope over the coming years to nerd it up in terms of decor, but for now a dedicated computer desk, painting desk and tabletop is the dream!!
At some point I will venture out and meet some of you northern types!

ParticipantI was going to say congratulations on reaching sanctuary North of the Trent. But if you are in Scotter you didn’t quite make it. So close!
You may still be close enough to the aura to find life a paradise and everyday a boon to existence. But beware the urge to wear flat caps, keep whippets and race pigeons (the little beggars always beat you anyway).
Best wishes.
