A game we played Sunday 17 March at a local games festival, FestiJeux in Carhaix (Brittany). There were one GM, two player characters in command of Nobunaga’s troops, two other player characters were monk leaders in charge of two monasteries.

Nobunaga’s army is coming to attack and destroy the temples…

One of the officers must kill everyone he can, the other officer is not so bad and lets civilians flee.
One of the monk chiefs will want to save his life and his treasure, the other monk will try to save a young child for an unknown (and still secret) reason that will probably be understood in a next adventure. Then a man comes to tell the monks that the whole area is surrounded on all sides…

AAR in French with many pictures:

    Who ‘won’ ?

The attackers had a superiority from the beginning and they managed to take the monasteries and the village (and to burn them) although with difficulty. They had to let most of the people go away, not noticing it included the chief monk of the first monastery (me) who went away disguised as a villager and his treasure-bearer also, some other monks escaped, and a child who probably is heiress of some important family. So everyone won, the monks will build other monasteries… 🙂  (The other chief monk was killed but managed to save the child).

    And who is this?

😉 I think he is some kind of monk who wears a basket hat (I was not the GM and I don’t know so much Japanese Sengoku culture) called a komusō or whatever. He was an unknown NPC monk but when I saw him arriving near the first monastery (where I was the chief monk) I took control of him and I told him to take a sacred object that I didn’t know where to hide, he did that, when in a difficult situation like this you have to imagine solutions on the spot. 😉

    From Wikipedia:

“The Komusō (虚無僧) (“priest of nothingness” or “monk of emptiness”) were wandering non-monastic lay Buddhists from the warrior-class (samurai and rōnin) who were noted for wearing straw basket hats and playing the shakuhachi bamboo flute, nowadays called suizen (‘Zen of blowing (the flute)’). During the Edo period (1600–1868) they obtained various rights and privileges from the bakufu, the ruling elite.”

I have a couple of Komuso ronin in my chibi ninja collection. Ninja who dress as komuso but use their flute to fire darts at their targets!

There are 100 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data

These Argard games are always so cool!  Wargame and roleplay at the same time, I wish more games were like this.

"I saw this in a cartoon once, but I'm pretty sure I can do it..."
