Looking for information, in depth if possible, on the military of the Italian States during the 18th century.17/08/2015 at 10:37 #29393HwicceeParticipant
Did you have anything in particular in mind? This is clearly a big subject if you don’t narrow it down a little.17/08/2015 at 17:43 #29419Lagartija MikeSpectator
Hwiccee, it’s a bit of a fool’s errand. I’m aware that most states were in the hands of Spain or Austria, but I was hoping to get a sense of any native elements present in the militaries of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and Milan, as well as the independent forces Venice and the Papal States. My long range goal is to create a speculative league of Italian States to oppose an early French Revolutionary Army I’m putting together.17/08/2015 at 21:01 #29447HwicceeParticipant
I am afraid I am more of an early/mid 18th century guy but I would have thought it would be easy enough to find the Italian units in the Austrian and other armies at the start of the FRW. These could perhaps have mutinied to join the ‘league’. Details of the Venetian and Papal armies are difficult to find in earlier times but you can find them and I would guess you can for this time. Unfortunately I don’t know where but hopefully someone else will.21/04/2016 at 17:03 #41032Mark MoriartyParticipant
