My good mate Mr Small is having a clear-out and has very kindly swapped me (for some redundant ancient and Napoleonic armies) his lovely 15mm 1980s Danish army and a stack of 1/100th aeroplanes, including my long-sought-after Holy Grail…

    The Revell 1/100th Harrier GR3!!!!

Just to gloat further and having had a root through the boxes, I’ve got the following Danish kit:

    4x Centurion 20pdr

    4x Centurion 105mm

4x Centurion DK1 (very nice conversions with laser-rangefinder box above the gun, etc)

    1x M113 Command Variant

    13x M113

    3x M150 TOW Carriers

    3x M106/M125 Mortar Carriers

    3x M41 Walker Bulldog

    1x M41 DK1 (an ASTONISHINGLY good conversion)

    6x Land Rover

    3x Land Rover with TOW

3x Land Rover with 106mm RR

    3x Land Rover Recce

    1x OH-6 Cayuse

    1x Saab Draken

Stacks of infantry – mostly painted in Danish ‘flecktarn’.

Most of the above is heavily covered in very nicely-done camo netting.

In another box is a load of Soviet kit:

    7x T-64B tanks

    1x T-64BV tank (reactive armour)

    1x RKhM NBC recce vehicle

1x IMR engineering tank (this one is VERY good)

    1x MTLB armoured carrier

    1x Vasilek 82mm auto-mortar

    Result! 🙂

Good for you Jemima Fawr! Was the IMR one based on the T-55 chassis or the later T-72 chassis? Either way, I am green with jealousy and envy. Enjoy and share your new acquisitions by posting reports of their use down the road please.

    Cheers and good gaming.

It’s the T-55 IMR – QRF model and beautifully put together.

Quite jealous JF, I’ve always liked the Danish Cold War army.

Any chances of a peek at the M41 DK1? (The lack of which in 6mm has prevented me from having a go at the Danes)

Very nice indeed. I agree, one of my favourite tanks of the period.

Not tempted to go for one of the (in)famous all black paint jobs for any of those M41’s?

I would if I could find even one photo of the mythical beast in question… 🙁

However, I think I might have to put that down to “some Danish bloke in a pub said…”

The only place I’ve ever seen it mentioned was in the epic trilogy on the Leopard 1, but it didn’t include any photos.  However, I have found plenty of photos showing M41 DK1s with a MAINLY black scheme – 2/3rds black and 1/3rd green.

    JF:

The Danish kit looks really good. Congratulations on getting such a good score. Well done, sir. I look forward to seeing them in action for the very short time that the Danish oppose the Soviet juggernaut before being consumed in flame and ruin.

Thanks for sharing your good fortune with us plebes.

Well I finished off painting the Danish infantry last night.  They’ve already been painted in the lovely bright green & black M1984 Danish ‘Flaecktarn’ camo, but needed their weapons and helmet garnish finishing off.  About 100 figures in all, so enough to make a battalion for ‘Battlefront: First Echelon’.

If anyone’s interested, my list for the Danish Army of the 1980s is here: http://www.fireandfury.com/orbats/modcwdanish.pdf

I’ve decided to completely re-paint the vehicles, starting with the M41s.  The Danes used a very definite system when camouflaging their vehicles, which was to have all four corners of the vehicle painted black.  Their green was also a distinctly brighter shade than that already used, so I bit the bullet and gave them a re-spray.

One nice surprise was that one of the M113s is completely scratch-built, with all the hatches open, troops seated inside and one exiting via the rear ramp.  He made this some 6 or 7 years before Flames of War brought out their plastic M113s!

I also recently re-acquired some long-lost 1/100th aircraft that had lain forgotten in Mr Small’s attic. 🙂

The Tornado, F-104 Starfighter, Alpha-Jet and MiG-17 are repainted Italeri/Fabri die-cast models, the MiG-29 is a straight-out-of-the-box die-cast model, the F-4 Phantom is a Revell easy-build kit and the MiG-21s are Tamiya kits:

What colours have you used for the Luftwaffe planes? I really like that scheme (and will be nicking it if that’s ok!).

I did those over ten years ago, but it looks like Humbrol 159 Khaki Drab, 67 Panzer Grey and 116 US Green?  The grey should really be darker and there should perhaps be less contrast between the greens.

This was the standard camouflage for 1980s Luftwaffe jets.  I can’t remember which year it came in (1980ish?), but prior to that they were two-tone grey/green on top and light grey underneath, much like 1960s/70s RAF colours.

If you have any G-91s, they never went over to that scheme.  They stayed in the old scheme until retirement in 1982ish.

Re Luftwaffe markings: The older scheme also used MUCH bigger Iron Crosses, with one being applied to each wing.  Whereas this new scheme used small crosses, usually with only one on the port wing and none on the starboard wing.

First load varnished and based – 3x M41, 1x M41-DK1, 3x Recce Land Rovers, 3x TOW Land Rovers, a Draken, a Vasilek auto-mortar and the Harrier.  I’ve also done four Centurion DK1s that I’ll varnish and base tomorrow, as well as a Danish F-16.

Shame about the Harrier’s decals – gone quite silvery despite my best efforts.  Probably due to the fact they’re 30-odd years old?

I’ve had decals disintegrate in the water when they’re that old! Have you got some microsol handy Mark? It sometimes helps with the silvering & strengthens the decal considerably. Ignore me if you’ve already done that… :^P

    Hi Etranger,

No I didn’t, foolishly.  I was previously using Humbrol Decalfix, but foolishly loaned it to one of my minions for an aeromodelling competition last year and still haven’t got it back!  With the diabolically poor decals supplied with the Team Yankee kits, I got away with simply using plenty of Humbrol Glosscote and Montana matt spray varnish, but that didn’t work for me this time.  I think I’ll have to paint over the decals.

I’m just about to use the low-vis US decals off the same sheet to mark up an A-10, though the surfaces are flatter this time, so fingers crossed!

Oh yes, I’ve had decals disintegrate – I’ve had Revell decals persistently disintegrate even when relatively new!  Worst of all were the ‘Novo’ kits my dad used to bring home in the late 70s/early 80s – those decals would simply turn to dust.

Cheers Rod!  I’m hoping to get them on the table in a couple of weeks, when the minions are on half-term holidays.  I’ve also now got all the infantry finished off and based.  Also now got some M113s on the go.  The four Cents, F-16 and an A-10 are also now finished, bar a few decals on the A-10. 🙂

Novo, there’s a blast from the past – the ex-Frog range with some really obscure (for the time) models. I think I’ve still got a Frog kit in the stash somewhere!

Yeah, my dad would do the Sunday paper-round for our local newsagent and they would often give him a Novo model for me along with his pay.  I had dozens of un-marked aeroplanes hanging from the ceiling and whole squadrons of really obscure ones! 🙂

I seem to remember that the Percival Proctor was my most numerous aeroplane… I presume that they were the kits the shop couldn’t sell! 🙂
