Bateria de Cenizas – Fifteen Inch Coastal Battery guarding Cartagena Naval Base

On a short winter-sun trip to Murcia, Spain we took time to look at the fifteen inch coastal battery built in the late twenties and one of two designed to protect the Spanish naval base of Cartagena.

These massive guns were fired in anger during the latter stages of the Spanish Civil War as Nationalist forces attempted to land troops in support of an uprising in Cartagena with one transport ship sunk from three hits, causing the ship to break in two.
