We refought the Spanish Civil War Battle of Jarama on Monday using the A World Aflame rules by Osprey. I played the Republican defenders and we were trying out the rules.

See how we got on on my blog:

Has anyone else used AWA and what did you think?

    Thanks for reading

Great report and very interesting to see these rules in action. I have them on the shelf but have never yet deployed them in anger. Having read through them, I thought they were rather like the original Rapid Fire rules so units disappear really quickly once the shooting starts. Is that impression correct?

Never argue with an idiot. They'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

As Ruarigh said, I’ve got and read them but not used them.  IIRC, they seemed pretty good and I liked the ammunition re-supply rules.  I have sort of planned to use them for VBCW, but as with so many other cunning plans, not managed to do anything with them

I’ve often wondered about these rules and now thanks to your AAR and that on your pal’s blog I know.  Thanks very much.

Thanks guys, I’m glad you all liked the AAR.

As for the rules, yes, units rapidly disapear when the shooting starts, a little too much for my liking. This also means it’s not so much a Battalion game as a skirmish really. They are a little confused as to the scale, for example, there is a damage chart for attacks against tanks, which is fine if the model represents one tank, but not a company of them! The initiative rules don’t really appear to have been thought out very clearly, as whoever gets the highest roll on their initiative controls the turn and gets to fire first without their opponent returning fire until after the casualties have been removed. This means that a unit with high initiative will wipe out the opposition if they are in close range as they only need 4+ (IIRC) on a D6 to cause a casualty!

Besides this, we didn;t really get to see how the ammo rules worked as we were resupplied at the end of each day, each day being six turns and no unit having less than six points of ammo. In a longer game, it may become an issue, but it had no impact in this one.

There’s a lot to tweak, but if you like old school style games then it has a lot going for it. A reference sheet would be a good addition though….

Cool. Thanks for the comments on how the system works. I gave up Rapid Fire because units just disappeared without the opportunity to respond, so perhaps these are not for me either. At least I have a better idea of what I’m getting into if I try them first though.

No problem. Are you sure you’re playing RF correctly? Units get to fire in an opponents turn if they haven’t moved in their previous turn, like an ambush, so holding off pays off.

And in other news, Dean has updated the AWA rules, not play tested yet, but it’s a few ideas:

Good question, and I don’t know. This was back in the nineties and I just remember my Republicans disintegrating in the face of Nationalist firepower. Part of that was certainly the fact that my guys had to assault the Nationalist positions in the couple of games we played, but it just seemed to encourage static battles.

I don’t the the rules to hand right now, but I’m sure you must have been missing something. We’ve played it for the last twenty years or so and nothing like that has happened with us. I’ll check the rules when I’m home later today.
