Is there a detailed study/breakdown anywhere of the casualty figures from the Battle of Normandy, ideally on a week-by-week, day-by-day, or operation-by-operation basis? I’m interested in both sides, but particularly the Allies. Equipment losses useful too.
Not to the best of my knowledge although Zetterling makes a brave attempt to do it for the entire German Army in his “Normandy 1944”, much of it is speculation based on strength returns.
It is usually the sort of thing you get in summaries of operations, but the vagaries of reporting and definition mean you aren’t ever going to get day by day or even week by week casualty totals. The overall losses, for the Allies at any rate, are reasonably accurate as those individuals will have been processed by the various medical, notification and gravestone registration systems. Eventually.
Records for the Germans are somewhat more patchy, particularly for the Falaise battles.
