Sandboxy is good! I love systems that allow you to build your own story, rather than be shoehorned into a railway-linear mission (like a lot of RPG modules used to do)

23/04/2019 at 23:54 #113166Gone FishingParticipantThat’s actually really helpful, thank you. I’ve got THW’s Back Alleys, Bright Lights (5150) in the mail and will be interested to see what it has to offer for the genre. Ed at THW said it would be the best fit for the genre, possibly with New Hope City as a supplement. Keep up the great work!
24/04/2019 at 00:37 #113168OldBen1ParticipantNew hope is what you want, it’s pretty much tailor made for detective work. I like the department but found it to be as frustrating as it was helpful.
24/04/2019 at 10:30 #113179jagannathMemberThis is really super cool – I always liked the idea of a more detective centric game (I was going to do an ancients one at some point because of a very particular Xyston mini) but wan’t sure how to approach. Didn’t know New Hope existed, maybe I could reskin that too.
I love your small tile/boards, they always look so good.
24/04/2019 at 11:11 #113182Thorsten FrankParticipantWhat an interesting project. I´m totally in awe.
Don´t know if you were in video games but have you taken a look on the old Blade Runner game from Westwood for inspiration?(Video link for reference; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot6saSlDypI&t=555s )

I had totally forgotten about that game! I actually still have it on multi-CDs!

24/04/2019 at 15:08 #113214OldBen1ParticipantAlright, hot on the trail our detectives decide to pay a visit to a local watering hole called Tetsuo. Several neighbors in Sheldon’s apartment complex confirm his on and off again relationship with Tina the bartender.
The board:
My repurposed Alien sci fi tiles and rpg tiles. I included a small parking lot, alleyway, dance floor, VLTs and a small D.J. booth. You may have noticed that the bar is populated with the crew from the Nostromo!
Our detectives approach the front door and meet up with an impressive bouncer. I was hoping to trick him into thinking we were sanitation officers. No dice, I rolled a 2. After threatening him with an arrest for obstruction he let reluctantly us in. Thank goodness I rolled well the second time.
Our detectives confront Tina. I rolled low on the people evidence. Tina mentioned that Sheldon had been hanging out with an old partner from the department. She confirmed he owed money to the local Yakuza.
Unfortunately for our detectives a couple of Nexus 2s were hiding in the alley behind the bar. I rolled low on my intuition so they got the drop on the Blade Runners.
A crazy firefight ensues. With all the confusion, one of the bouncers is tagged. The Replicants use the bar as cover while the detectives stand their ground. McCourt escapes unscathed but Abdi takes 2 wounds. This means he will be out of the next mission. Unfortunately Tina is also able to escape before the detectives can question her further. Since I rolled so poorly on my evidence checks I figured Tina would probably escape. After trying to fool the bouncer and failing I imagine he would have called for back up.
What to do now?
I’ve tried to leave myself a couple of clues to follow up on:
-Who is the ex partner? Is he/she involved?
-Who does Sheldon owe money too? Who has been paying his rent?
-Do the dead replicants offer us any clues?
-Why is the Blade Runner squad involved in the first place?
24/04/2019 at 15:50 #113221Darkest Star GamesParticipantAnd the mystery deepens! It’s probably a good thing more bystanders didn’t get hit, could have been a real fiasco.
So, shake down the local Yaks next? Or dig through the trash looking for Tina’s body? (were I involved with hiding skinjobs, I’d whack her since now she not only knows too much but is a point of focus for the cops)

24/04/2019 at 21:04 #113234ThuseldParticipantThis is inspiring me to leap into a small collection of 15mm figures and RPG sort of terrain.

25/04/2019 at 12:42 #113290Wouter WolputParticipantA very interesting project and I love to hear where the investigation is going to lead them.
It’s been a while since I’ve read ‘the Department’ book, it’s from the same creator as ‘Ghosts of Hefei’ isn’t it? I think I even got some 15mm models for the game.
I love how you made the game your own and changed the rules to the point you felt comfortable with them.
Consider this topic subscribed 😁
25/04/2019 at 14:27 #113298Gone FishingParticipantI can only echo all that’s been said above. You’ve inspired me to do a similar project in 28mm; Back Alleys, Bright Lights (5150) arrived yesterday and my nose has been buried in it ever since – there are some excellent ideas there! One of these days I hope to get a look at The Department.
Your set-up looks very good. Hoping to see more reports on the ongoing investigation…
29/04/2019 at 00:58 #113559OldBen1ParticipantNot enough time to post a game this weekend, busy doing Dad stuff. I did some rpging instead.
Henri Abdi was wounded in the last battle so he will have to sit the next encounter out.
Tina the bartender has no fixed address and was being paid under the table. She has a lot of priors though for solicitation and narcotics in one of the rougher neighbourhoods downtown.
The replicants were processed by the boys down at the lab. I rolled very poorly so they came up clean. They were built in Sanfrancisco in 2007. Their RN numbers have been wiped. They also had aftermarket parts. It is rumoured that the Tyrell corporation has been flooding the American market with smuggled or stolen replicants to create a dependency.
McCourt has two options. He can comb through the records to find any former partners connected to Sheldon, or he can see if he can stakeout Tina’s hood.
Abdi will Combe the records as McCourt will stakeout Sector 4.
29/04/2019 at 15:35 #113615Darkest Star GamesParticipantThat is a very dark and dangerous looking place. Also so wet he may get his shoes ruined!
"I saw this in a cartoon once, but I'm pretty sure I can do it..."
30/04/2019 at 04:02 #113663OldBen1ParticipantHere is a possible layout for my stakeout/ tail. I don’t really have enough 15mm buildings so I am going to us my rpg tiles to represent the alleys between the buildings. McCourt is in the bottom left hand corner. I’ve added my encounter tokens from my Thing game and rolled up 6 encounters including one with Tina and her pimp. No real time for gaming. Too much work and Dad stuff. maybe tomorrow.
30/04/2019 at 05:00 #113664StroezieParticipantYou know, I think it works better this way.
For some reason I find it easier to imagine this setup as a bunch of narrow dark alleys than if there were some too tiny building mixed in, if that makes sense.
Cheers,
Stroezie.
30/04/2019 at 15:41 #113716Darkest Star GamesParticipantmaybe tomorrow.
Oh you tease!
The layout looks really good. Sometimes it’s better to do it this way as having full size buildings might look great, but might also be a complete pain to try to move figures through.
"I saw this in a cartoon once, but I'm pretty sure I can do it..."
02/05/2019 at 07:34 #113858telzy amberParticipantThank you. Just popped by THW’s site to see if I could provide a link, and see that most of their games have been withdrawn – including Larger Than Life, which might be the best fit for Blade Runner-type action. I’m pretty sure Ed, the proprietor, would print up a version for you, or send a pdf, if you ask nicely, or Noble Knight probably has a copy or two floating around. And then I see The Department is out of circulation as well. It’s a shame these games slip through the cracks… Looking forward to watching your progress!
DrivethruRPG has most of the 2HWG 5150 games in pdf https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/2562/Two-Hour-Wargames/subcategory/4702/Two-Hour-Wargames and Rebelminis have the pulp sets, Larger Than Life – Directors Cut and some others http://www.rebelminis.com/pulprulesets.html also at Drivethru https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/2664/Rebel-Minis
03/05/2019 at 00:36 #113907OldBen1ParticipantNew Hope City PI is my favorite. It is really tailor made for hunting fugitives and solving crimes. You could probably get away with just ordering the one book if you were on a budget.
Now if only I had time to actually play once in a while!
03/05/2019 at 15:12 #113946Gone FishingParticipantIf any are interested, the hard copy New Hope City is on sale for a very affordable price at Noble Knight Games.
07/05/2019 at 00:05 #114116OldBen1ParticipantMcCourt heads to Sector Three to see if he can find Tina. He comes across an old snitch from his days on Vice. After slipping him a few credits the man points Northward.
McCourt runs into an unlicensed rogue replicant. A firefight ensues!
McCourt is having no luck. A juvenile is attempting to steal a car. McCourt is able to flash his badge and issue a warning.
07/05/2019 at 00:12 #114117OldBen1ParticipantMcCourt shows the next man Tina’s picture. He tries to sell the usual runaway story. Unfortunately after some poor rolls this man turns out to be Jerome, Tina’s hired muscle. McCourt and Jerome battle it out!
Tina is waiting across the street and is calling someone on the Vidphone. McCourt puts Jerome down and chases after Tina!
Tune in next week!
07/05/2019 at 21:57 #114175Darkest Star GamesParticipantThat’s a rough go, but at least he found Tina. Now, if only the cardio pays off and he catches her…
"I saw this in a cartoon once, but I'm pretty sure I can do it..."
08/05/2019 at 09:16 #114191EtrangerParticipantThen he’ll have Tina to Turn’er…

18/09/2019 at 20:44 #122647OldBen1ParticipantI’m finally back!
Well sort of. I took a little bit of a hiatus to deal with some family stuff. The detectives are back on the case. No time to post pictures but I did some rpging.
Our characters so far:
McCourt – veteran cop
Abdi – McCourt’s partner and injured new recruit
Galang – murder victim – dirty cop involved with Yakuza and possible replicants.
Tina – Galang’s girlfriend and possible accomplice.
Glencoe – Lt. in charge of newly formed Blade Runner unit. Worried about Galang’s impact on the unit.
McCourt finally subdues Tina in a hail of gunfire. The wounds are superficial and McCourt accompanies her to the hospital after calling for back up.
While Abdi heals a broken wing he does some financial investigation. He learns that Galang was receiving wire transfers every month. A little further digging reveals Galang’s former partner has also been receiving funds. Galang’s former work partner Desiree Hser-tee is also a suspected dirty cop living off world. Her specialty is tech crime.
McCourt needs to interrogate Tina.
The detectives need to locate Desiree and bring her in.
18/09/2019 at 21:36 #122652RhodericMemberOoh, off-world! I’ve long been fascinated by the idea of “off-world” in Blade Runner and other cyberpunkish universes. That screenshot corresponds well with my vision of it (what game is it from, BTW?). I imagine there’s much more of the colony underground, but it’s still not a metropolis by any account.
18/09/2019 at 23:15 #122655Gone FishingParticipantGreat to see this thread going again. Looking forward to more!
19/09/2019 at 03:31 #122671EtrangerParticipantGood to see this back!
19/09/2019 at 14:55 #122729Darkest Star GamesParticipantVery glad to see you back! I’ve been jonesing to read how this comes out, this is such a fantastic campaign.

You may have noticed that the bar is populated with the crew from the Nostromo!
I missed that! Who makes the crew in 15mm?
One more thing, Ed THW http://2hourblog.blogspot.com/ has a new genre coming out, 5150 Working Grave (Graveyard shift) it is his police version
22/09/2019 at 12:04 #122978Wouter WolputParticipantHappy to see that the investigation continues, great report!

I believe they’re made by Khurasan.
24/09/2019 at 21:07 #123148OldBen1ParticipantThey are from Khurasan!
I was able to start painting some new cars from Darkest Star Games and some more roleplaying too!
The interrogation of Tina was interesting. I rolled quite high on the place evidence. Tina disclosed that Desiree was gathering deactivated replicants stolen from Off world colonies, and wiping the VIN numbers and selling them to the Yakuza. Galang owed the Yakuza a great deal of money from an old gambling debt. He was acting as a go-between. The bar Tetsuo was the drop off point.
Our heroes have decided to visit the off world colony and arrest Desiree.
I have to gather some terrain for an Off World Colony.
24/09/2019 at 21:23 #123149Darkest Star GamesParticipantI had always thought that Blade Runner and Outland took place in the same universe, just with Outland occurring before there were Replicants, as both have that gritty lived-in feel. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
