The feel through the floor came before the sounds of the explosions in the harbor.

Everyone in the headquarters looked around. Oberstleutenant Wimmer went to a south facing window and started at the rising column of smoke from the small harbor.

” Scheiße Scheiße Scheiße, verdammt noch mal!” was all he said.

Phones began to ring and radios became alive.
Oberstleutenant Wimmer went to his office and shut the door.

Capt Murphy made it to the emergency bridge and asked his XO for a damage report. LT. Mickey ” Doses ” Dollens, reported, Sir we took a torpedo in the starboard bow, but it only partially detonated. The Russkies must be scraping the bottom of the barrel for munitions. But we have a 49-foot hole and taking on water.  Our top speed is only 12 knots and even that could rip the whole bow off, we have to make for the nearest port with a repair facility.

The first fight is at Old Hans’s farm on the southern outskirts of our fictional town. So when I find a paintbrush and flock the Home Guards bases we will begin.

Game note Craig rolled on the 8 Million bayonets table for our troops’ training and morale,  both sides are Confident Trained. That means neither side has an advantage. Both sies can call for reinforcements during the game. A D-10 will be used. On turn 2 both sides can roll. Both sides need a 10 to bring it in, then both sides add 1 to the die roll per turn until the number 10 is achieved.

Lt. Hans Gruber was at 39 younger than half his platoon and older than the rest but thru hard work and training, his was the best of his Home Guard units. The platoon had been sent to Old Han’s farm on the outskirts of town to hold off any E. Germans pushing north toward Copenhagen he was confident in he would be up to the task.

As his platoon arrived at his uncle’s farm he thought back to better times here as a child. The same old farmhouse and two outbuildings still stood. crops in the fields and land plowed for the next growing season.

Oberstleutenant Wimmer was heading the staff meeting as some of his on duty Staff officers debriefed their specialties.

I am the current Commander of the 10th Panzer Regiment. We are at about 1/3rd strength. As we get more vehicles and materials salvaged we may get something like 2/3rds of our equipment and men.

We have a few additional elements that were loaded on our transports. These include obsolete vehicles from the Patriotic War.
    We have ammunition for some.
All units will be issued 1/2 rations of ammo.

We have the Divisional AntiTank company.
We have Divisional scouts, minus some vehicles.
We currently have the 2&3rd mechanized infantry battalions but only 1 battalion of BTRs.
We have our integral mortars and Air Defense for 2 battalions, plus some of the Regimental assets.
We have the divisional bakery and Regimental mess team but we will have to buy or acquire petrol and foofstuffs.

While military maps are in  short supply, we were able to get dozens of roadmaps at the local petrol stations. Each scout team and each company commander will have a road map. The artillery and observers will use the military maps…

Be aware that a few scouts raced to Copenhagen earlier I’m the civilian movent.

We will begin a movement north.
    2 prongs. Each will have.
    Scouts on civilian vehicles.
    Pt76 platoon
    T34 platoon
    Followed by
    T55 platoon
    ADA section
    Infantry company in BTRs.

Make as many reports by civilian telephone as possible. Our switchboard number is BR549.
Use radio to call for artillery and high priority spot reports.

    All weapons free.

Synchronize watches. 15 after the hour in 5, 4,3,2,now.

Scouts move out 15 minutes. Keep good distances. We obviously do not have air superiority yet.

    Questions?

The scouts moved along the empty four lane highway to the north.

They had borrowed some civilian vehicles from the Volkswagon dealership. There was a good natured grumbling about who would ride in the “Things” but they were built for this mission.

It was strange to see and hear the tanks being tanks a few hundred meters behind.

Oberstleutenant Wimmer read the report from the field.

Movement north along 4 lane highway was uneventful until we got to this point. There were several agricultural buildings and a cut through a hill channeling the column to the area of the road.

Scouts went forward and were fired upon from ambush by a platoon of M60a3 tanks and an entrenched Infantry company.

    Both scouts were KIA.

Lieutenant Affelstrudel deployed his PT76 platoon aggressively, destroying 1 M60a3 and damaging others. He called for immediate artillery fires but didn’t get any response.
He took the dugin enemy infantry under direct fire, assisted by the shooting from his covering platoon of T34s.
As the enemy was breaking, fire from several ATGMs struck the PT76 platoon. All 3 vehicles exploded with no survivors.

The T34 platoon retired in good order and sent this report.

But the E Germans walked right into an ambush… they died and fleed other than the old M-48 tank his unit had come out without a scratch!!!

He knew next time he would not be so lucky…

PM Burke read the report of the brave platoon of home guard soldiers with pride and concern they had held off the E Germans but lost one precious tank and poor Denmark had next to none left.  He called Gen’l Keepers and begged for operation Nordic Hammer to be moved up…

Capt Murphy paced the Flag Bridge while puffing on his new pipe an anniversary present from his wife. He had sent her the Scottish tea she craved, His XO joined him and gave him good news the damage to the Tricky Dick while bad was not as bad as it first seemed so the repair crew moved up departure time by 3 whole days. The Tricky Dick could leave port on the 17  day of the war.

The harbor ADA was on high alert.  All of the new radars were placed along with the sound surveillance system.  Sa2. Sa4. Sa8 ringed the harbor.  The unloading had gone well under the cover of darkness. The morning mists had turned into a soupy fog both in the harbor and ashore.

The ship captain protested as the special teams rigged his ship, but after being reminded who actually owned the ship and receiving his papers and a bonus, he was happy to leave the warzone.

The ship was so settled in that opening the pumps to flood her had barely moved her, but the explosive charges that removed her lower bow did shake things up a bit.

The amphibious vehicles streamed out of the ship easily.  BRDM, BTR. SAU. MTLB almost anything in the inventory were headed up the boat ramps and into warehouses or covered parking.  The idea of doubling the high water fording kit height was even allowing the tanks to trudge slowly across the shallow seabed to the ramp.

She was nothing more than a sitting target; empty, when the NATO aircraft came to pounce on the decoy.

    The ADA was waiting…

The advance company of the tank battalion of the tank regiment drove ahead in the thick fog that had rolled in with the east wind.

The old IR driving and targeting devices made vision little better than just sticking your head out to look around.

The infantry dismounted and started to probe forward.

NATO artillery cut loose and after the thunders died down the panzer battalion commander saw many columns of smoke boiling up through the fog.

Flight of the Intruder… Lt Geroge W Bush was flying an unfamiliar plane but war is unfamiliar downright crazy. His target a Commie freighter in the harbor a sitting duck!! He came over the target and the flak exploded all around him he reached bingo and released his bomb load just as the flak caught up with him….. a plume of smoke and debris are all that was left of him…

Capt Murphy waited as long as he could to give the rescue teams more time to look for any sign of Bush. He could wait no longer, he called the Whitehouse Chief of Staff to inform the President that his son George was missing in action… cold comfort but it was all he had…

“Ha,” Pittman chuckled, “as if you even had to ask! We’ll leave by nightfall”.

Lt. Col. Pittman held an emergency briefing immediately following his conversation with the General. He took a long drag from a cigarette before then putting it out and briefing the men.

“Gentlemen, this is it. You magnificent bastards are going to be the first into Denmark.” The men erupted in cheers and ‘oorah’s’ at this. Pittman held up a hand to quiet them down, and  they did so.

“I’m not gonna lie to you boys and say this will be a cakewalk,” Pittman began. “We’re going up against the E. Germans. They may not have the most up to date hardware, but by shit they got a lot of em. I’m sure most of you have seen a fair few WW2 movies and will probably recognize the iconic T-34 the Commies had. Well, they’re back and they aint friendly this time ’round.”

He paused and nodded to the projector operator. It flicked to the aerial recon photos taken earlier in the day.

“Now the Danes did a damn good job holdin’ ’em off at first, but they were pushed back and now they’re desperate for help. We’re gonna give it to ’em. We don’t have time to wait for the Tricky Dick to undergo repairs, so they’re sending us in to do a HALO jump.” Pittman could see some smiles and nods at this.

“So this means we’ll have to travel light. We won’t be able to bring any ATGM’s or M60’s, we’ll have to opt for M249’s and LAW’s, and I’ve requisitioned every damn one that could be spared and any explosives and Night Vision they can give us too. Air support is an unknown at this time, so we’ll pack a radio just in case. Once we land I want complete radio silence, don’t want them knowing we’re there yet. Now, as you can see, the hills channel the enemy into an ambush position, which the Danes took advantage of. We will drop behind the Danish lines and link up with them. Once contact has been established we will prepare a second ambush behind the Danish lines. Once the Commies re-engage the Danes, our friends will perform a tactical withdraw, feigning retreat. We will be lying in wait on both sides of the highway, concealed and silent. Once the enemy convoy has reached Site 1,” Pittman pointed to the marker, “We will break radio silence and start the hammer-blow. I want that lead and rear vehicle toasted, boxing them in. Immediately following, I want our LAW and explosives teams ripping into the tanks and APC’s with everything they’ve got. Riflemen and 249 gunners will be responsible for pinning down any dismounts. I want chaos gentlemen. We don’t have to kill em all, although that would be nice. We just need them scared so shitless they tuck tail and run, buying the rest of the MEF time to launch. Do I make myself clear?”

“SEMPER FI!” the men let loose.

“Good,” Pittman retorted. “Let’s go make history.”
