Poco Caesare looked around the pilot’s station of his ship. The United Star Systems Registry BLD-459 aka “Brave Little Denmark -459 was docked at station tracking up hourly fees. The pilot, Master Lincoln Grant,  had gone down to the surface on R&R, but hadn’t returned.

Poco needed a pilot. While he could pilot his own ship in an emergency, his trainee pilot liscense wasn’t really good without a senior pilot at his shoulder. The Pilot’s Guild was prone to fine ships who didn’t have a certified pilot. And you sure as Hel couldn’t get a trip insurance ticket!

Master Jon  Knight, the combination purser and cargomaster was looking to Captain Caesare for directions.

Captain Poco Caesare turned to look at his Master Chief Engineer Fyord Harry’sson. He shrugged his massive shoulders and said in his high pitched voice, “Um, maybe we, um, should ask the, um, Pilot’s Guild, um, if they have any, um, replacements?”

Poco, relaxed in his cabin waiting for the Guild pilot to come aboard. Pilot Linc still missing bothered Poco, Linc was usually dependable he’d tied a bender twice before but had made it back to the ship before lift-off both times.  Poco filled his pipe with long shag and puffed it alight. The air scrubber kicked itself up a notch. If he didn’t have to lift he would have liked to stay and find out what happen to Linc, but time was money and he had little of either.

Captain Caesare had already received her vital data, from the Pilot’s Guild.  She had top 25% marks in all curriculum and examinations. She had never had an accident that was reportable.

Her employment history was varied.  Usually she signed onto a ship, made one or two “runs”, and then was on the available roster.

Her disciplinary record was “sealed”. Her previous employer comments were minimal.  Some were sealed.

Master Pilot Kathryn Dancer stood before Captain Poco Caesare with her hands on her hips. She looked him up and down.

“Do you need a pilot for this bucket, or did I miss my gym date and travel all the way  over here for nothing?” she asked.

Poco tapped his pipe out and replied Yes I need a master pilot but you are not what I was expecting. Your cabin is just up the hall to the left. Stow your gear and meet me in the control room in 30 minutes so we can warp out.

20 minutes later, when Captain Poco Caesare strolled into the pilot station, he saw Master Pilot Kathryn Dancer was checking all of the gauges, relays, control interfaces, internal communications, external sensors and plotting computers.  “Redundancy is a lifesaver” was affixed to a visible wall surface.

She turned and acknowledged that had Captain was there while adjusting her headpiece microphone.

“Attention all hands! Attention all hands!  This is your pilot. Prepare for acceleration in ten minutes. MARK.  Detach all umbilicals. Secure all hatches and locks. Section chiefs report when ready”.

    Well Captain?

The pilot buckled herself into her robust acceleration couch. It had a magnetic umbilical attachment to the one on her head which attached easily. She momentarily closed her eyes to reorient herself.  Next she thrust her hands and forearms into the padded sleeves that kept all the manual controls and cutouts in easy reach. She closed her eyes. The ship’s communications sounded a bell, twice. “Five minutes until acceleration, stow all loose equipment and engage safety belts.”

She swiveled to look at the Captain and raised a questioning eyebrow.  “Sir?”

The captain stands there, mouth hanging open, and thinks about the vastness of space.

Captain Paco starts twitching and drooling.  Kat Dancer realizes that he is waaaay far away from the bridge. She must find a method to interact or the mission will miss their launch window!  She tosses her head and slowly starts to pull her hands from the console sleeves. Then she starts to unzip her pilot’s vest, and unclip her magnetic umbilical attachment to the ship.

Captain, are you quite well?  Do you need a medic?
