ParticipantHere is a post meant for your loved ones and those who buy gifts for themselves. A top 5 gift buying guide for miniature wargamers. Being that we all play different games, I focused on accessories to enhance your hobby experience. Come check out the list.

ParticipantThat is a heavily monitized blog!
I bought my own wargame gift for Mrs. Wargamer to take out the hassle for her, but I know other gamers that just hand over a list of their ‘reasonable’ top 5 wants and that way the element of surprise is there, but it is a controlled surprise 🙂
For the kids (adults), I just buy it and hand it over for wrapping, they seem happy that the hassle of choosing is taken away from them and are just mildly amused at what keeps dad happy!
For one of them I picked up one of those motorised nail varnish shaker devices, which I am hoping will help (will a ball bearing added) keep my vallejo paints fully shaken and mobile. I’m sure that box cover brought a smile to her face.

ParticipantI bought myself some resin ruined buildings for 6mm WW2 gaming from Ebay. I have looked at them for ages and thought about it, but took the plunge. I hope they will make my tables a little more interesting.

ParticipantA list that includes nothing I’d actually want from companies I wouldn’t deal with if I did want something similar.
Aaaaaargh!! I already have enough problems with well meaning people buying me stuff I’ll never use because someone told them “any wargamer would want this.”
I’m with those who provide their nearest and dearest with a list to buy from or a present to wrap …. and am grateful to get similar back!
My closest friend and I buy ourselves something of an agreed value “from each other.” They know as little about wargaming as I do about cloisonné enamelware.

ParticipantI ordered and paid for 3 Charles Grant wargaming History books from Ken Trotman, for Mrs H to give to me on Christmas day. I was offered a new shirt shoes, and jumper but I preferred my idea

ParticipantBooks are the easy option, I sometimes buy a small pile of cheap/specialist books for my wife to offer to those of our kids who can’t think of anything else then she gives me the rest from her. If the books are readily available then I just give them a list.
I wouldn’t want paint bought by anyone for me – very personal thing paint. My wargaming mostly mates don’t do presents between us – with the possible exception of significant birthdays.
To be honest I’d rather go without than have them waste money buying stuff I’d probably never use.

I think that is the very heart of the matter. The hobby is so personal to us that what we want and what someone else thinks we may want can be worlds apart. A few years ago, I was bought a detailed book on a subject that could never interest me, a huge shame, because it was bought by a very considerate person who had taken the time and care to buy me something and their expectation was that I would be excited.
This year, that person is buying me a book again. I have chosen it, I need it and I am excited – the perfect gift!

Yes my feelings exactly, that’s why I drop big hints in September to family for book tokens or a particular book.

ParticipantOnly once (a very long time ago) did my wife give me a wargames present. She went to my favourite wargames shop and asked the owner what she should buy. He suggested a unit of Byzantine infantry – an excellent choice and it still takes the field every so often 43 years later. After that I have suggested a list that is usually music or books.

ParticipantNice ideas, but it is devilishly hard for a non-wargamer to buy for a wargamer. I’d say that maybe paints are the safest way to go, but then I always enjoy trying out new brands and types of paint, especially those special wash or shade sets that might not buy for myself.

Thanks Norm! Yes, the site is heavily monetized. I have been running it since 2016 and want to keep it going. I host it on a paid platform so it has to bring in something to help pay the server costs and keep me motivated.
A motorized shaker is on my wish list too, but it didn’t make it to the Top Five Gift Ideas posts. Thanks for the comment!

That’s a good way to do it too Mike!
