Alrighty, lets give setting up a communal planet a try!

Rules: You may make as many entries as you wish, however a respondent may not have 2 consecutive entries (someone else must have posted in-between).  Each entry may only be about one specific bit of fluff, whether flora, fauna, environmental, governmental, etc., and must begin as a general entry (such as:  The Reticualted Vorbo is a small colorful reptile analog predator that dwells in the leaf liter of the midland forests, and is well known operatic sounding territorial call…) though detail may be added later either by original poster or someone else (such as: R. Vorbo cont.; Often unnoticed until it moves, the R. Vorbo blends almost perfectly with the fallen leaves of the Brikus tree, laying in wait for passing Turner Beatles.  When startled the R. Vorbo suddenly bursts into motion and sprints in a zig-zag pattern generally until it is stopped by an object somewhat larger than itself…)

Please try to keep each single entry from being “complete” in and of itself so others may add to it if they wish.

With that, let us start with something bare bones!

    Planet survey name:  Aleph 5

Location: 5th planet from Star.  Orbit is within the close band of “Goldilocks” zone.

    Size: Medium

Hydrology: 50% liquid covered.  Moderate polar ice caps.

Landmasses: 2 large continents with several chains of islands between them strung along the equator.

Tectonic activity: moderate-high; higher than Earth standard and seemingly slowing

    Human Population: 6.8 Million

Primary Settlements: Port St. John, Salander, Oriel, New Kaituma

Colonial Administration: Territorial Democracy (Chartered Colony of the Alliance of Industrial Nations, under mandate from the Federated Territories)

Legal Status: Organized Unincorporated Colonial Territory under Allied Colonial Law (with Federal oversight by the Directorate for Colonial Affairs)

Advisories: Under threat of attack by nomad space raiders who call themselves The Imperium of Mankind.  Now permanent orbital facilities present, ground based traffic control via various independent downports only.

    Notes on System:

Aleph 5 has two moons, initial survey found both to have high Iron and Zinc content. A third micro satellite have been detected and is suspected to be a captured asteroid, it is made up of 50% silicone and 40% ice. Together these three entities orbit the plane in an eclipse, alighting every seven and a half years producing a very peculiar radio interference phenomenon where the bodies trap solar flare radiation from the star. The phenomenon lasts 6-11 hours depending on strength of the solar flare. Communication during this period is near impossible and travel along the upper atmosphere and beyond is extremely dangerous. At ground level radiation risk is minimal except at the north and south pole.  Because of this the planet has no up port, or permanent orbital space facility. In fact satellites are designed to be disposable as they are damaged beyond use during this period. This means all customs transactions, both import and export take place directly on the planetary surface. Usually at one of the downports but potentially, and often, transactions occur under less official scrutiny.

    Notes on Environment:

Aleph 5’s atmosphere degrades the stars blue shifted light to give a subtle reddish cast over everything, which is especially noticeable at below sea-level elevations, giving the “rust valleys” their name.  Sunrises and sunsets are said to be especially spectacular on this planet compared to many others.

    Notes on Eco-system:

    Notes on Flora:

Ygrenars are semi-mobile trees found on the lesser continent, on average 60′ in height, that migrate annually following the rains.

    Notes on Fauna:

Ygrenartar is a family of ground dwelling tripedals, locally called ‘Hoblers’. They have a symbiotic relationship with the Ygrenar trees, exclusively nesting in the tracks left by migrating Ygrenars. These omnivors has a life span of 3-5 years depending on subspecies. Some smaller sub species are known to climb trees.

Skin Crawlers are distant relatives of the Ygrenartar family. Measuring 4-12mm they are carnivorous parasites that burrows under their victim’s skin. Within a few hours the burrower could lay as many as 2000 eggs that hatch withing days to infest and eat their host from the inside. Infestation is very painful, the parasite’s anesthetic saliva wears out after the initial entry into the body. The only practical cure to Crawler infestation is to quickly amputate the affected limb, torso and head infestation are fatal. Preventative measure is to eat carrots, onions or garlic, most roots will deter them to an extent but the three mentioned are the most effective.

    Notes on Infrastructure:

For global communication the planet uses orbit coaster drones. Solar powered, propeller driven coasters, these aircraft orbit the plant at high altitude substituting for the lack of satellites. A fleet of these drones are flown in strict pattern in the upper atmosphere, providing both communication and navigational services. The drones are slow and their solar cell requires a long (3 hours) prep time before they are ready to operate, taking an additional 12 hours to climb to station before service is fully up. The drones are operated on a three months cycle, every three months of flight time needing a maintenance down time usually lasting a month. These drones are landed, usually a day before the radiation phenomenon and services usually resumes as normal withing 24 hours of the phenomenon ending.

The lack of large enough drones to carry sophisticated surveillance equipment for constant monitoring makes policing the planet difficult and the ideal location for those wishing to bide from the law.

    Notes on Industry:

The Humpdrum Heavy Construction Corporation (H2C2) is a powerhouse on Aleph 5. Responsible for over 20% of all civil engineering projects on the planet. The company is also rumored to have a hand in every corrupt dealing there is, whether this is true or simply conspiracy theory is difficult to say.

The Occultus syndicate specialize in smuggling anything illegal in and out of  Aleph 5. Experts in exploiting the smallest of weaknesses. Falsifying identities, computer hacking, blackmail; even the odd bribe here and there. Are just some of their traits which enable them to deliver their contraband unhindered.  H2C2 are rumored to be among their best clients. But it’s not just the authorities they have to worry about. The Imperium of Mankind would take a keen interest in any of their cargo. The Port St John has spy’s everywhere, so one must tread carefully.

The Blue Brigade is a large security company that was originally founded off world but had been making Aleph 5 their base. Their name us a homage to their origin, the original members were all ex law enforcement officers. The Brigade no is made of two battalions, the True Blues where all the remaining original members are and the Wild Blues. The True Blues is a light force specializing in LALO (Lower Atmosphere Low Opening) planetary drop, hostage rescue, spacecraft boarding and seizure, and investigation. The Wild Blues on the other hand is a more overtly military formation made up of two Mechnaized Troops, a Light Armor Troop and a Mortar Battery.  Currently the True Blues are contracted to police the planet’s orbit and near surface smuggling operations. There are also rumors that their investigation arm is looking into H2C2.

    Notes on Nation States:

The “Hinterland Union” is a federation of small settlements covering almost 1/8 of the large continent.  Despite it’s great area, the Union’s population is just barely 400,000, with most settlements being no larger than 10,000 sophonts.  With no great population center as a capitol, the Union’s government travels from province to province via an old converted surplus Colonial Destroyer (no longer space-worthy, most armament removed, but exceptional anti-grav units) named “Union Hall”, visiting each at least yearly.  Called “those set’lers” or “Hinties” by most Aleph5ians, the Union is seen as an unorganized group of crazy mountainmen that want to keep good hard working corporations and small development groups from helping turn Aleph5 into a proper and civilized world.  This view is not helped by the Union’s Range Patrol (effectively heavily armed police that also act as militia) often referred to as “Boonie Boys” or “Trucker Joes”, who use whatever force necessary to keep “wildcaters”, “resource poachers” and other illegal and foreign operations out of Union territory.  Often spread very thin and very far from backup/support the URPs have a very dangerous job that involves violence more often than not.

    Notes on population centers:

New Kaituma is a settlement 120km inland on the southern hemisphere on one of the large landmasses.  Population: 1.5 million.  It lies on the Kaituma river, which takes its name from a river on another planet. The name was adopted because one of the original settlers who helped found New Kaituma had ancestry originating in an old settlement on another planet from a long time ago. Survey teams looking to expand colonization efforts on Aleph 5 discovered in this area large deposits of useful industrial ores that could possibly even be used to make Aleph 5 a self sustaining colony. It has since become a hub of industry, drawing in many who wish for honest work for an honest wage. Due to the heavy, industrial nature of the local economy, massive efforts have been made to invest in green technologies to lessen the negative impact of such a large centre of industry.

Port St. John is an actual port, on the coast. It was established after colonists discovered a wealth of sea-life much of which is edible. However, when out fishing one must take care to keep watch for 2 unusual natural phenomena:  Rogue waves are constant threats.  These waves tower up to 30 meters tall and most often travel at divergent, if not directly opposite, directions from the normal wind driven waves.  Most often these waves are generated by clashing mid-level ocean currents that have been disturbed by lunar mechanics, generating directional turbulence.

    The second dangerous phenomena is…

    Notes on Culture:

Nerd Stop are currently topping the music charts with just over 575,000 HV4 downloads.  Circumventing the strict copy rights law, teenagers all over Aleph 5 are wearing Nerd’s Top t-shirts (sic, deliberate misspelling). The trend had caught on to the military and police as can be found on various vehicles being named ‘Nerd’s Top’ and many of its variations.

Go5ip is a nightly gossip broadcast across Aleph 5. It keeps the youth and bored people updated with insignificant goings on across the globe. One recent story concerned Nerd Stop bringing some kind of legal action against a disgruntled fan who had been outside their concert selling unauthorized merchandise. It was also heavily implied that the CEO of H2C2 was recently seen picking up a prescription for penicillin, while walking very awkwardly.

The Aleph 5 Language Act provides that all languages of its inhabitants will be treated equally in the public sector, as far as is reasonable and practicable.  A part of the population being of Celtic Terra origin, local place names including “Y Coed” (if any forest) or “Mawr / Fawr” (if any large terrain features) are officially recognized, as other place names in the same vein will be.

    Other Notes:

The Constellation of Vengars Sword, visible from the northern hemisphere, is commonly considered to be a good luck charm. Vengar himself was an explorer. Solomon Vengar was the captain of mankind’s first sublight colony ship Vengar’s Sword, launched centuries ago. After leaving communication range, contact was never reestablished.

The city of ‘Crater’ is one of the largest on Aleph 5. It began as a secret cult’s hide away inside the crater of an extinct volcano, but having it’s own small spaceport it attracted attention from other opportunist. Eventually a community sprawled around the mountain to provide for the cult members and mine, in exchange for the use their spaceport. The cult had long disappeared but their spaceport remained in use and along with the abundance of easy to mine minerals fuels to the continued growth of the city.

Crater and it’s accompanying spaceport soon became a place of commerce and diplomacy. A place of trade and opportunity. A place where one could make a fortune if one knows the right people and techniques. But it can be a dangerous place.  It’s not a case of who wants a piece of the pie. It’s a case of who wants the biggest piece. The biggest piece doesn’t go to the monkey or the giraffe. It goes to the lion, because the lion is the king. And everybody wants to be the lion.

The current top dog , in control of Crater’s is Red 5. Commonly believed to be a person, it is actually a cooperation of the six big criminal groups operating in Crater. It is easy to name the five, but few are are aware of the sixth and fewer still could agree who the sixth is. Although the majority of their products are foodstuff and everyday appliances, their main income is in kidnapping and making people disappear.

    Life's too long.
