Does anyone know whether Confederate infantry companies carried their own flag, I have read about Counties raising companies and presenting them with a flag and have seen pictures of ‘county flags’. If so was it only during the early stages of the war or was it common practice throughout the war. I would be grateful for any input on this subject as information about this is very limited.

Most Confederate company flags were made by the local ladies, and presented to the company prior to joining its assigned regiment.  Once the regiment was formed and the regimental standard issued with much ceremony, the company flags were sent home.  The overwhelmingly majority never saw battle.
